How often should I use an enema for constipation? Are the fleet enemas (sodium bisphosphate) ok twice a week?
See your doctor: See your doctor. You may gain sufficient benefit from increased fiber and fluid in your diet so that enemas won't be needed. However, a complete history and physical is crucial to exclude other causes of constipation such as hypothyroidism or anatomic problems. Enemas do have potential complications: I have cared for patients with rectal perforation after enemas. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
My 7 week old baby is in a lot of discomfort due to constipation.
Can we administer an enema, or should we rather use glycerine suppository ?
Pain/ constipation ?: Studies show a 7 wk old fusses an average of 2hrs/d for no identified reason. They fuss using their breathing muscle which makes the belly bulge & hard. Many assume they have pain. If stools are soft they are not constipated. If they are 1 oz of undiluted prune juice 1-3X/d can loosen them up in 2-3 days. See below. : Good question. Fleets enema: commonly used ~4 oz saline laxative; sodium phosphate-based; can cause adverse reactions in certain individuals (age >55) with certain pre-existing conditions (e.g. dehydration, impaired kidney function, congestive heart failure, abnormal electrolytes) if used too often (>3 days or >1 dose/24 hrs). I recommend you ask your MD about proper dosing and alternatives. ...Read more
Think it over-: There are many premade enema kits that are safe and effective. Perhaps you should try these if you are constipated. Miralax, (polyethylene glycol) natural fiber like prunes or oatmeal or fiber capsules may all keep you regular. Anything smaller than the size of your stool may be used to deliver an enema safely. Water may be used, HOWEVER there is probably NOT other entirely safe ingredient (soap/coffee/molasses). ...Read more
