Fleet enemas can be used safely in pregnancy but should not be your first choice for constipation. Constipation in pregnancy should be treated with the following, in this order:
1. Fiber supplement and increased hydration
2. Oral stool softener (like docusate)
3. Miralax (polyethylene glycol) or milk of magnesia, or other oral pro-motility agent
4. Rectal suppository (like bisacoidyl)
5. Enema (like fleets). ...Read more

Fleet: Plain or mineral oil is ok. However, you need to be examined to determine the cause of your recent constipation, with a colonoscopy if you haven't had one in the past few years. Start simple, but...: First optimize fiber ; h2o intake. Next, docusate helps moisten ; soften hard, dry stools. It is not a true laxative, but facilitates natural defecation, usually within 12 to 72 hours. But change in bowels is a "red flag" that needs evaluation if persistent. ...Read more

See below.: Good question. Fleets enema: commonly used ~4 oz saline laxative; sodium phosphate-based; can cause adverse reactions in certain individuals (age >55) with certain pre-existing conditions (e.g. dehydration, impaired kidney function, congestive heart failure, abnormal electrolytes) if used too often (>3 days or >1 dose/24 hrs). I recommend you ask your MD about proper dosing and alternatives. ...Read more
Think it over-: There are many premade enema kits that are safe and effective. Perhaps you should try these if you are constipated. Miralax, (polyethylene glycol) natural fiber like prunes or oatmeal or fiber capsules may all keep you regular. Anything smaller than the size of your stool may be used to deliver an enema safely. Water may be used, HOWEVER there is probably NOT other entirely safe ingredient (soap/coffee/molasses). ...Read more

Chronic constipation: Chronic constipation is very common. It is not necessary to have a bowel movement every day. Using enemas on a daily basis will not help the problem, and can be harmful. You should see a gastroenterologist to evaluate why you are constipated and to make a long-term plan to treat it without using enemas. I would increase the amount of fiber in your diet in the meantime. Good luck. ...Read more
