Rarely. : The HSG procedure can in some cases open one or both Fallopian tubes. This is a temporary effect. Also a small catheter and guidewire can be used to clear out the Fallopian tubes. This can be arranged through an Interventional Radiologist or a Fertility Gyn. The test will be scheduled according to your cycle and you will get antibiotics. Unlikely: If you know your fallopian tubes are blocked -probably from a dye/radiology procedure - that is a bad sign. This can be from many different causes, but I am not aware of a way to unblock them. Under the microscope, on cross section, the fallopian tubes look like a maze game (very convoluted insides with a ton of surface area). These areas have become scarred closed. You may need artificial means.. ...Read more

I have one blocked fallopian tube...I wanted to know what's the best alternative to surgery to unblock this tube?
Depends on where: Tubal blockage where the tube leaves the uterus may have little overall effect on pregnancy if the other tube is open. Blockage at the end of the tube though is very detrimental to pregnancy even from the other tube. Due to fluid moving from the blocked tube into the uterus. If that's the case, likely need some surgery to fix the problem; removal or repair via laparoscopy. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Hope for the best: Congratulations on having your tube unblocked. Your doc is correct though...There is no guarantee that the tube will work. I only have one fallopian tube and had surgery to unblock my remaining tube.My hubby slightly more abnormal sperm than average, what are our chances?
Difficult: It's generally difficult to clear out blocked fallopian tubes because the blockage often comes from previous infection like chlamydia or from abdominal surgery. There are some infertility doctors that can use a small camera in the uterus called a hysteroscope and open the tubes that way, but it's still difficult. I recommend that you talk to an infertility expert. ...Read more
Could one Fallopian tube be partially blocked if the HSG only showed a very thin minimal release of dye? Other tube was clear showing lots of die.
An obstruction: would cause the tube to dilate proximal to it. However, there are other abnormalities, such as inflammation/scarring, that can cause an abnormally narrowed or irregular tube. Also during an HSG a normal tube may spasm and look blocked or narrowed, so talk to your doc about your results. ...Read more

Depends: My understanding is that sometimes the tubes can be unblocked, it depends on what is blocking them. Sometimes when something is pushing on them from the outside that can be moved or removed, allowing the tube to open. Since we have IVF these days, it is not clear if it is best to take the tubes out. I have heard when a tube is unblocked it may close back up within months.
