Doctor insights on:
How Often Do Normal People Get The Stomach Flu
Often: If you are in contact with many people on a daily basis for work or school then it is not uncommon to get a "stomach flu" several times a year. The peak season for enteroviruses (stomach flu) is spring and summer. During those seasons children can get sick every month or so especially if they are in a large daycare. The viruses are spread by poor hand washing and contact with contaminated surfaces.
Can you tell me about how many times does the average person get the stomach flu in their lifetime?
Total guess...: No guarantees, but i'd guess about 12 for the United States, assuming living to full lifespan. I have nothing to back that up. Just a guess.
How can I get rid of acid reflux after the stomachflu? I got over a weeklong bout w stomach flu and now I have horrible acid reflux! Is this normal?
Every 2 months I get severe nausea & vomiting. All tests are 'normal'. Doc says its just bad luck w/ stomach flu. Could there be another cause?
Sure: Guy or gal? If gal, could be related to hormones, menses, ovulation (perhaps just from one of the ovaries, thus every other month). Check timing of symptoms with menstrual cycle. Could be cyclic vomiting syndrome; could be other triggers for the symptoms, could even be migraine related. Could be other stuff too. Keep looking.
Day 4 of Stomach flu, haven't been able to poop in 3 days--is this normal? I've been drinking water-should I get medicine? Still having hot flash
"Stomach flu": Per-se does not cause constipation - and generally lasts
Your Immune System: Most stomach illness are caused by viruses that your body's immune system will fight off. The "out of your" system philosophy may come from advice by medical professionals not to treat diarrhea aggressivley. This recommendation is not made because the diarrhea "gets it out of your system" but rather because of side effects of some of those anti-diarrhea medicines.
Yes: There are many different viruses that cause the stomach flu. So you can get it again, or at least something just like it.
Depends: Norovirus is the most common viral cause of "stomach flu" or gastroenteritis. Exposure can result in illness within 24 hours. Other causes of gastroenteritis like bacteria can take several days. Handwashing and food safety can help prevent spread of illnesses like these. Thanks for trusting HealthTap!
Pet to human: Infections. Zoonoses effecting dogs that can be directly or indirectly transmitted to humans & that involve the GI tract of one or the other include: Salmonellosis (bacteria), Giardiasis (intestinal protozoa), Strongyloidiasis (parasite) & Campylobacter enteritis (bacteria). Don't know of any intestinal flu that is transmitted between dog & human.

Yes: The term stomach flu is a collection of illnesses not a single germ. A variety of adenoviruses & enteroviruses can attack areas of the digestive tract & follow a variety of patterns. Since the term involves the stomach, most will involve some belly pain & intolerance to some foods, vomiting, cramps or diarrhea at some point. Some may pass through the system with fever as its only feature.

Variant: Viruses mutate and can cause repeated illnesses, but are you sure this is the stomach flu? If your GI symptoms keep recurring, you may need to have them checked by a doctor.
Flu & basketball: Possibly. It all depends on whether the sick person (who is unwisely playing basketball) coughs on you, which is likely, particularly if you are guarding him or rebounding against him. I doubt that such a person would be wearing a mask. My advice would be to pass on the experience.
No idea: I do not imagine the actual frequency of "food poisoning" in china is known, but the term is so vague that it could refer to any of several dozen conditions. Viruses which affect the GI tract are extremely common, including influenza, which may produce GI symptoms. My guess is that this would be far more common than illnesses transmitted through food, but have no data to support that opinion.
I live in Sweden and My doctor gave me zofran (ondansetron) to take when I get the stomach flu to take away vomiting. Do zofran (ondansetron) help? Scared of vomit, panic!
Good for vomiting.: If you are questioning the efficacy of Zofran (ondansetron) for vomiting, I can tell you that it's very good for that. What I don't approve of is the indiscriminate treatment of vomiting or nausea without a doctor's close supervision. Vomiting is a symptom, which can be caused by many diagnoses. Treating a symptom without knowing the diagnosis can lead to trouble.
