How long do I have to get a tetanus shot after I get a wound?

How long do I have to get a tetanus shot after I get a wound?

Depends: If you completed the primary series in childhood & have had one within five years you can probably just wash out a simple wound & not worry. If you have never had the series & have a dirty wound u could see the tetanus begin to set up over a day or so, so a shot & anti-toxin might be needed within hours. If u fall in the middle, get it done within 48hrs, but do a good job of cleaning the wound 1st.

How often should a person get a tetanus shot if he works outdoors, sort of a park ranger?

I'd repeat every 5y: Effective protection depends on lifestyle. For the average person the coverage should be effective for 10 years if the primary series was completed earlier. If one walks in muddy streams, camps, hunts, works in the dirt a lot, i'd only count on 5 years before getting another booster.

How much do I have to bleed to get a tetanus shot?

Any break in skin: The spores of tetanus are similar to any bacteria in their ability to enter a break in the skin and begin thriving on the juices therein. As the germ spores begin to form an infection, it will eventually be able to make tetanus toxin and cause tetanus. Some injuries are more likely than others to expose you to tetanus, but any break in the skin might. A booster every 10 yrs is simple protection.
