How Much Zinc To Take For Acne
Can I take 50mg of zinc a day without any effects (long term or otherwise)? I'm nearly 21yrs old and I take it for acne trouble.
Zinc for acne: According to the online version of the merck manual for medical professionals "…the recommended upper limit for zinc intake is 40 mg/day. Toxicity is rare. Ingesting doses of elemental zinc ranging from 100 to 150 mg/day for prolonged periods interferes with copper metabolism and causes low blood copper levels, RBC microcytosis, neutropenia, and impaired immunity…." best to lower your dose. ...Read more
I can't recommend it: Taking extra zinc can render you copper deficient, and you don't want to take it except for a really good reason. Your best over-the-counter remedy for acne is benzoyl peroxide. If this fails, get with a scientific physician instead of a glitzy internet disinformation page. We can manage it. Best wishes. ...Read more

I go gym and I need to take my protein shake, but the doctor gave me oxytetracycline for minor acne, is it safe to take the protein shake? Contains zinc
Sure: Be sure you use topical benzoyl peroxide, retinoic acid or salicylic acid while you're on the tetracycline for the acne. I can't advise zinc as a routine supplement if you're not a vegetarian who needs complicated supplementation. Cheap protein power you buy on your own may be a better choice. ...Read more
Can you take to many vitamins? At the moment I take 2, 000mg vitamins c daily, omega 3 (heard it helps memory) zinc and vitamin a (heard they helped acne
Not too many: You can't take too many vitamins- it is safe to take them all- thus the concept of a multivitamin. You can take too much of a particular one, but there is a wide margin of safety. What you are taking is safe, but doses of zinc above 60 mg/day may harm some. While it is safe to take 25, 000 units a day of vit. A it may be harmful to take more than 6, 000 a day in early pregnancy, so be cautious. ...Read more
What to do if I have acne. I take 400iu of vitamin e, 500mg niacin, 50mg zinc, multivitamin and fish oils, what order should I take them through the day?
Use a real Rx: Forgive my frankness. Beyond an economical multivitamin-with-minerals, these "health pills" are worthless for acne and are probably not doing you much good in any other way. If topical benzoyl peroxide has not cleared you in two weeks, get with your personal physician who can add something that will. Best wishes. ...Read more

Consider a better: Approach, HFLC, often far more effective. Study: DietDoctor. Com. Conversely, LFHC foods are associated with ↑ed incidence of acneform sebacious gland infections & lesions. While Accutane & benzoyl peroxide (in many formulations), tends to calm lesions, for many replacing LFHC foods with HFLC foods ends up far more effective. No evidence the vitamins your taking are effective. Do your own trial. ...Read more

I find no evidence that zinc has been found to worsen acne. Excess zinc can impair immune function (which could indirectly affect acne), lower copper levels, reduce iron function and lower HDL but I have not found a single report that it worsens acne. Research does show that in moderation it often helps acne.

Adjunct only: It will probably not clear you and i'd be pleasantly surprised if it even helped. Zinc is likely to upset your stomach, and if you take a lot, you can make yourself copper deficient. How about using an evidence based regimen instead? Benzoyl peroxide is not pleasant but it's your first choice; if you're not clear in two weeks, get with your primary care physician. ...Read more
Does zinc (20mg to 50mg a day) from the vitamin store help decrease acne? Is it worth a trying for a few months, in an otherwise healthy person?
No: Zinc is not an evidence-based remedy for acne. I'd discourage you from doing this as you'll upset your stomach and can make yourself copper-deficient. Generally, you'd do best to ignore internet disinformation sites about acne treatment and focus on what works. If topical benzoyl peroxide has not cleared you in two weeks, make an appointment to see your physician. ...Read more
Can I buy zinc supplements to treat my acne even if I do not have a zinc deficiency? I'm thinking about buying Nature Made's 30mg zinc tablets.
Save your money: 40 years ago there was a suggestion that Zn supplements might help acne. It was studied and shown to be NOT EFFECTIVE. So it was abandoned by those who actually know how to clear acne. But the frauds and crooks kept looking for suckers to sell to. They will sell anything the rubes will buy. Zinc supplements are useful for only a few special situations unrelated to acne. ...Read more
