Depends: Hi. There's no absolute right level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-D) in the blood. My personal goal for patients is to be at or above the mid-30's. It's estimated that you raise 25-D by about 6 for every 1,000 units of oral vitamin D you take. Therefore, based on how low you are, that helps you estimate a reasonable amount to take. 5-10,000 iu D3/day: With levels that low I advise you start by taking 10,000 iu of D3 a day for 2 months, then reduce to 5-8000 iu/day. At some point you should recheck your levels. Optimal levels are 50-80. It is best to take Vitamin K along with D and make sure you are getting Vit A as these vitamins work synergistically. Avoid D2, which is dangerous! The best source of vitamin d is that which your body makes from exposure of the naked skin to the sun rays. If this is not optimal then vit. D supplementation is necessary. Keep the blood level above 40 but below 90 for safety. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Depends: It varies by age from about 200 international units (0.005 mg) to 600 iu per day, but that may be too low if you are not exposed to the sun much.
