Careful with these: Fenugreek and turmeric can both be vasodilators, potentially adding to the BP lowering effect of spironolactone. Also both fenugreek and turmeric can increase pt and inr bleeding time -- so should not be used simultaneously. If the turmeric and fenugreek are only being used to spice food (and not in supplemental quantities) this risk would be much less. ...Read more

Is it advisable to take a turmeric and piperine supplement to promote an overall and generally healthy lifestyle?
Wait for research!: Before spending your money, wait and see what form and how much truly helps. Any substance can kill or cure or just make you poor. It's all in the details. There's some promising hints but the studies in humans used very few. Best bet? Do proven things, low fat, less protein, more exercise, less booze, and being happy, will all definitely help! ...Read more
What is it about turmeric that it works so good? I have a bad knee and decided to try it and it takes away a lot of the pain so how does it do that?
Hi, Thank you for your question.
Curcumin is most known for its potent anti-inflammatory properties. The compound has been shown to influence more than 700 genes, and it can inhibit both the activity and the synthesis of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2) and 5-lipooxygenase (5-LOX), as well as other enzymes that have been implicated in inflammation.
Hope that helps, Dr. M. ...Read more
Of small amounts of this Indian spice appear to be accepted by a large number of people but scientifically based medical studies are lacking! I would NOT recommend consuming large amounts of ANY so called "natural" food/spice. Side effects as well as interaction with normally prescribed medications is ALWAYS a possibility with these substances!
Hope this is helpful!

Is a turmeric (curcumin and black pepper) supplement advisable to take to promote a generally and overall healthy lifestyle? Any downside?
Yes, not for everyone: Turmeric is one of the healthiest foods we can consume but is poorly absorbed so mixing it with black pepper enhances absorption (or with phospholipids in a form called Meriva). It reduces inflammation, is good for brain, heart and liver, thins blood, protects against heart disease, cancer & Alzheimer's but can cause stomach upset for some and interacts with some drugs. I keep reading about the use of turmeric for help in the prevention of cancer, specifically pancreatic. Any truth to this and if so, how to take it?
Turmeric may prevent cancer, but you should use it for flavor rather than its ability to prevent cancer, which may or may not work out. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco or alcohol in any form.

Dr suggested I take turmeric for my fibromyalgia but I also have crohns. I've read there are gastro effects. Its this a recipe for ww3 in my intestine?
Do not take tumeric!: While an excellent anti-oxidant, it is a GI irritant. Yes, a recipe for GI battle, maybe not wwiii, but imprudent, nonetheles. Your question should be does tumeric help, inflammatory bowel disease or the arthritis frequently assicated with it. Zero studies. Not good nutritional support for your illness. At best, may not hurt, but clearly wouldn't help. Additional GI distress is not what you need. ...Read more
I'm currently taking verapamil 100 mg ER to treat migraines. I'm wanting to no longer take the meds because I'm now taking turmeric/ginger supplement?
It would not be a good idea to discontinue your medication without discussing it with the doctor who prescribed it. It is highly unlikely that turmeric and ginger will ward off your migraines. You may take these for the flavor and taste, but do not expect these herbs to treat any illness.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats.
