How Much Time Does It Take Claritin To Work
Who knows: Work for what? Claritin supposedly starts working within 90 minutes. But Claritin is also the weakest binding antihistamine sold over the counter. Personally, I feel Claritin is a waste of money. Use a stronger antihistamine like fexofenadine or Cetirizine which cause minimal to no sedation. Use Benadryl (diphenhydramine) only at nighttime because it can make you drowsy. ...Read more

Don't exceed dosage: Better not to exceed recommended OTC dosage unless seen by an MD, which you might want to do, as you might need another prescription medication to control your symptoms, goodluck ...Read more
I get headaches from allergies. Can I take Claritin (loratadine) and zyrtec at the same time? Claritin (loratadine) didn't work alone when I traveled away from home.
Yes, but: Both Claritin (loratadine) and zyrtec (cetirizine) are new generation antihistamines. While there is no harm to using them together, there is likely no added benefit either. The most effective treatment for nasal allergies is the topical nasal steroid sprays such as qnasl, flonase, veramyst, nasonex, (mometasone) etc if a person doesn't have relief with an antihistamine alone. ...Read more

However, in some people it may take up to 60 minutes to have its full effect. If it is not working within that time, or if the duration of effect becomes less and less, seeing an allergy specialist for allergy testing would be recommended as other treatments may be more effective. ...Read more

My husband swears Loratadine doesn't work for him unless he takes 20mg BID. What is the highest SAFE dose take?
Recommended dose: The recommended daily dose is 10 mg. It is fairly a safe medicine, but side effects may arise in high doses. It seems like he is tolerating the 40 mg/day dose. The high dose definition may vary from patient to patient according their body tolerance. As he requires a large dose, he might benefit from adding different class medicine, so that he can avoid the side effects from unconventional doses. ...Read more

Stimulant medication: Both dayquil and Claritin (loratadine) d contain stimulants, so it would be duplication to take them together. The phenylephrine in dayquil is weaker than the Pseudoephedrine in Claritin (loratadine) d. Dayquil is for colds, and you should not take antihistamines like Claritin (loratadine) when you have a cold anyway. Antihistamines slow the clearance of secretions and prolong viral respiratory infections. ...Read more
