Unlikely: The role of milk thistle in fatty lived disease is limited. In hepatitis C one study showed that high intravenous doses may slow progression, but is not a cure. I do not recommend milk thistle to my patients. It is safe and if someone is ademant about taking it I don't necessarily discourage it. A large ongoing study may clarify the role of milk thistle in the near future. ...Read more
Doubtful: According to nih, "previous laboratory studies suggested that milk thistle may benefit the liver by protecting & promoting the growth of liver cells, fighting oxidation (a chemical process that can damage cells), & inhibiting inflammation. However, results from small clinical trials of milk thistle for liver diseases have been mixed, & two rigorously designed studies found no benefit.". ...Read more
Besides taking milk thistle, what should I do to reverse the effects of a fatty liver (not from drinking)?
Weight loss...: Fatty liver disease is most often a consequence of the foods we eat and being overweight. There is no specific treatment (drug or supplement) effective for reversing fatty liver. If your bmi is > 24, losing weight will result in improvement in ast/alt and reduction of fat in the liver. Certainly elimination of alcohol (if you drink) is recommended. Stop the milk thistle. Good luck! ...Read more

Cirrhosis unlikely: Glad you're not drinking. Milk thistle protects from toxicity of some chemotherapeutic agents but I am not aware of any good work to suggest it helps common non-alcoholic fatty liver. I am going to assume you do not have hepatitis C or any other serious illness. Your best help is sensible eating and being physically fit. ...Read more

With non-alcoholic fatty liver is milk thistle and vitamin e+ exercise effective and if so what dosage?
Unknown: whether they are effective. There are studies on both sides of this issue, and the majority of studies have not shown efficacy of either medication in preventing the progression or promoting the improvement of liver inflammation. This is particularly true with vitamin E, where all studies have shown lack of efficacy. A few studies of milk thistle have shown small improvements, but most not. ...Read more
Can milk thistle reverse fatty liver? If ct shows mild fatty liver a year ago but us shows no fat now does it mean it's better or is us not accurate
Ultrasound is better: US is more sensitive than CT in detecting fatty liver. Reports indicate that the seed extract of milk thistle, Sylimarin, has antiinflammatory effects and is also reported to improve non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (a form of fatty liver). As a natural product, risk of allergy is higher and large controlled trials are lacking so safety is less known. It also may dangerously interact with some meds ...Read more

Get 2nd opinion: Milk thistle won't help. The main support for Viusid is an article from an obscure group in Cuba. Epaset is an irrational mix of nutrients. You need to have hepatitis C and Wilson's ruled out, and hit the gym really hard if you want to save your health. I see you also take hormone therapy of some sort. You need a relationship with an authentic, scientific physician. Your liver wants exercise. ...Read more

I am taking Milk Thistle, Resveratrol, Vitamin E, Fish oil, NAC, and SAMe for my fatty liver. Has anybody else read the scientific literature on these supplements for helping decrease NAFLD? What are your thoughts if so?
Too many unknowns: Herbal supplements (or similar) are some of the non-scientific products sold to people in stores, on the internet, and elsewhere. It is usually untested and unproven what a brand, an ingredient, or an amount will do inside a particular person's body. If an herb seems to help, looks harmless, and is inexpensive, then it might be ok to try. Finding applicable research studies on supplements is hard. ...Read more
