What could cause low MCV and high RDW but normal MCH, hemoglobin, and hematocrit for over a year?

What could cause low MCV and high RDW but normal MCH, hemoglobin, and hematocrit for over a year?

How low?: Reference ranges are set so that several percent of healthy folks fall outside on either end. If your peripheral smear is unremarkable and the MCV above 70, I'd forget the whole thing. My RDW is always high from donating blood. There are some variants of thalassemia minor that will produce this and puzzle people over a lifetime, though MCH is usually lowish. ...Read more

Anemia: Anemia is a broad term for low hemoglobin caused by many different things. Common things are common as we say. For a woman who is still having her menses, it's not unusual to be mildly anemic. Make sure your diet has enough iron. If you or your doctor doesn't suspect iron deficiency, then it will require workup for other things. Good luck! ...Read more

I am A 33 year old woman. Dr recently told me my hemoglobin was 16.9. I smoke is this the reason for it?

It can be..: Smokers do not get as much Oxygen in their blood as nonsmokers (hypoxia) because of the pollution that interferes with their lungs' functions. To compensate, their body makes more oxygen carriers: hemoglobin & red blood cells. This of course assuming you have no primary bone marrow or liver disorder. ...Read more

No worries: Her hemoglobin and hematocrit are within normal limits, so you are not anemic. The normal values for MCV, MCH, and MCHC indicates that your red blood cells (RBC) are normal in size and contain a normal amount of hemoglobin. With all other results being normal, the RBC value is likely due to lab error (variation). Hemoglobin of 12 is in the low normal range probably due to menstrual blood loss. ...Read more

Whats the normal hemoglobin level of 40 years old woman? How to improve it?

Whats the normal hemoglobin level of 40 years old woman? How to improve it?

Varies a little: Your lab might use different "normal", but in general: 12.1 to 15.1 gm/dl = hemoglobin for adult females. If you have chronic diseases (kidney probs, diabetes, etc.), then you should discuss w/your dr, otherwise, iron-rich foods like dark greens (spinach) and red meat (in moderation) are two obvious answers. Multivitamin w/iron (or prenatal vit) can also help. If still low after 3-4 wks, see ur dr. ...Read more
