How Much Formula Should A 1 Month Old Eat
Is this okay for a 1 month old to do? My baby was born 6lbs 2oz and 19in long. He's now one month and since like two weeks back he's been eating 4oz of formula milk every 2hours and a half-3hours during the day. At night time it weird, like yeaterday I fini
Don't: Don't wake him up! Thank your lucky stars that he's a good sleeper and let him sleep through the night! Unless he has a genetic disorder that requires him to eat every few hours (and you would know this because it is part of the newborn screen), it is fine to let him sleep throughout the night - even 8 hours if he'll do it. He may want to eat more during the day if he's sleeping more at night, so if he's draining that 4 oz bottle, you may want to offer 5 or 6 oz. He'll let you know when he's hungry. Congratulations on your baby! ...Read more

Constipation: Babies at this age have variable 'poop' pattern. Anywhere from 15 times a day to every 5 th day is normal as long as baby has soft abdomen, is not fussy and is eating right. Apple prune juice concentrate helps! ...Read more
Why??: Such additives do not improve the babies nutrition. Occasionally a doc will recommend this to help with reflux, but beyond this I don't recommend it. The introduction of cereals and other solids should wait until infants tongue thrust fades and they sit around 6 mo. When offered it should be on a spoon as a paste. That helps teach baby a new feeding method as they get old enough to enjoy it. ...Read more
Would a home-made formula of coconut water, soaked chia seeds and almond milk contain enough omega-3 for a 1-month-old baby? Also adding vit and min
Bad idea: The commercial formulas are the product of more than 60 years of lab based research and nothing you can replicate with your well meaning attempts. Each are required to meet the standards of the FDA. Rather than a sign of love and devotion you could create a real dietary imbalance that could injure the child.I have hospitalized kids fed these home brews. ...Read more
What do you suggest if my child is not producing enuff milk for her 1 month old. How should we begin the switch to formula?
Formula options: Milk supply can be increased by nursing or pumping more frequently, staying well hydrated and rested, and by supplementing your diet with the herb fenugreek. However, starting with a standard cow milk based formula such a Similac or Enfamil should be fine unless there is a close family history of lactose intolerance, in which case a lactose-free (usually labeled as 'sensitive') or soy can be used. ...Read more
Not too late: Breast feeding is superior in all ways to formula feeding, and at 4 weeks, it is still not too late to enhance lactation. Regular nursing (every 2-3 hours day and night) for 10-15 minutes on each breast should increase lactation in this demand and supply mechanism. Mother needs to stay well hydrated and as rested as possible. Fenugreek can help, and lactation consultants are invaluable. ...Read more

I caved & smoked 10 hits of marijuana yesterday. I don't plan on doing it again, should I continue to breastfeed my 1 month old? Or formula?
Formula: Your smoking marijuana exposes your baby's developing brain to a toxin. Thc is stored in your fat, and your breast milk is high in fat. If you smoke marijuana and breast feed, you're serving your baby the drug also. If you're going to smoke marijuana instead of protect your baby, at least provide formula feeds instead of breast milk. Please tell your pediatrician about these issues, too. ...Read more

Is switching baby formula brands dangerous my baby is spitting up a lot so dr said to switch to enfamil ar from similac advance baby is 1 month old?
Not specificly: The switch is not much of a change. You go from one companies bovine formula to another companies bovine formula thickened with rice solids. Thickening can sometimes reduce spit up. You could simply add a half teaspoon of rice cereal/btl & do the same with the similac. Similac has a "sensitive" that changes to a soy protein source & removes the lactose. Either product are good nutrition & may help. ...Read more

1 month old, formula feed infant has dark green poop that smells like skunk (sometimes stringy looking)...baby is gassy as well. Is this normal?
Could be: The first thing I would want to make sure is that your child is gaining weight appropriately and thriving. If that is the case, there are numerous things that could be of help, such as different formulas. That decision can be best made with your child's doctor who will know what formula your child is and/or has been on. Good luck. ...Read more

My daughter is 1 month old I am breast feeding and formula feeding her. She hasn't pooped in 5 days. Should I be worried?
Not necessarily: Some breast fed babies have bowel movements every feeding, once or twice a day, or every 5 days. Formula can be somewhat more constipating, causing firmer stools. As long as the stool is soft and your baby is not uncomfortable, it's not a problem. If the stools are hard, or your baby is really fussy, see your doctor. ...Read more
Can I use glycerin suppositories for my 1 month old baby she has 2 days without BM? I feed her formula and breast milk but mostly breast milk.
Mgt: Babies have different stool patterns. I would suggest discontinuation of the glycerin suppositories. Continue to keep your baby well fed with mostly breast milk. If there is no stool in 5 to 7 days, a visit to your PCP is advised. At your next visit, review the results of her newborn screening tests. ...Read more
