Is it safe to have an appendectomy in 2nd trimester of pregnancy? What is the success rate? Do they calm the fetus down prior to the procedure.

Is it safe to have an appendectomy in 2nd trimester of pregnancy? What is the success rate? Do they calm the fetus down prior to the procedure.

Overall yes but: Any surgical procedure, ideally, should wait until after the baby is born. Surgery, even simple surgery, carries risks to both the mom and fetus. However, if the appendectomy is truly needed then proceed. ...Read more

Pregnancy (Definition)

When your due date arrives, you will be more than ready to have your baby! Most women deliver the baby somewhere between 37 and 42 weeks. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, only 5% of babies arrive on the exact due date. Approximately 7% of babies are not delivered by 42 weeks, and when that happens, it is referred to ...Read more

How much of a risk is gestational diabetes to the fetus?

How much of a risk is gestational diabetes to the fetus?

Profound.: High blood sugar during fetal development can lead to excessive growth (macrosomia), predispose to adult diabetes mellitus, increase the risk for cesarean section, shoulder dystocia and fetal death from cardiac arrhythmias and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Most women with gdm have normal outcomes, but are at increased risk for all of the above, as well as polyhydramnios, preeclampsia (hypertension). ...Read more

Would there be a (big) difference in the measurement if a 12wk old fetus compared to a 9wk old fetus? The gestational age would be determined in u/s?

Would there be a (big) difference in the measurement if a 12wk old fetus compared to a 9wk old fetus? The gestational age would be determined in u/s?

Yes: An first trimester sonogram is fairly accurate at dating a pregnancy (within a margin of error of about a week). At 12 weeks menstrual age with a viable pregnancy a sonogram measurement of 9 weeks would change the dating of the pregnancy and your due date should be based on that sonogram. Later sonograms should not change this established date. ...Read more

I'm 21 weeks of gestation, how can I know that the fetus is well? Can dopplar study be reassuring?

I'm 21 weeks of gestation, how can I know that the fetus is well? Can dopplar study be reassuring?

Ultrasound: Many moms do find reassurance in US as they can actually see their developing baby moving around and the physician can check anatomy. They aren't required though. Your OB is monitoring your growth and the babies heart rate - two parameters that are followed to see if everything seems to be progressing normally. ...Read more

Ultrasound; Gestational sac at 10 weeks looks 5 times bigger than fetus (which looks 7 weeks) should I be concerned?

Not really: There are several parameters that are measured to follow fetal growth in utero: biparietal diameter, femur length. They don't measure size of fetal sac, so no comparable data available and it's just nonsense to talk about it. ...Read more

Ultrasound says my fetus is 6 weeks 2 days but my gestational sac is 7 weeks 2 days. Heartbeat is normal. Is everything ok?

Most likely: The most accurate measurement of the fetus is the crown rump length. The gestational sac is like a fluid filled balloon, not a perfect sphere. So the measurement of the sac can vary quite a bit depending on what part was measured. If there is already a fetal heart beat, that is a great sign. Keep your follow up appointments with your OB doctor. ...Read more

After the 6th or 7th week of pregnancy does the fetus double in size, causing the gestational age to be off?

After the 6th or 7th week of pregnancy does the fetus double in size, causing the gestational age to be off?

Early pregnancy: The rate of growth of the fetus in the first trimester is very rapid. An ultrasound in the first trimester has only a 3-6 day error while later in pregnancy that error grows to 3 weeks. The gestational age is more accurate in early pregnancy and less likely to be off in the first trimester. ...Read more

Sonographer could not see fetus (only gestational sac) and said I am 5wks 2days. Do you think everything is ok with baby? Or is it just too early?

Very Good Question: With early ultrasound, it is now possible to see embryo heart motion as early as 6 weeks. While your concern is valid, repeating the ultrasound in 1-2 weeks will reveal the health of the pregnancy. Early pregnancy failure is a possibility I am sorry to say. However, if you do make it to 8 weeks with an embryonic heart beat, the chances of loosing the pregnancy drop dramatically to about 3%. ...Read more

Why are fetuses measured by gestational age and not by the actual fetal age? So if u are 12wks the measurements are actually of a 10 week old fetus?

Why are fetuses measured by gestational age and not by the actual fetal age? So if u are 12wks the measurements are actually of a 10 week old fetus?

Math: Gestational age is based on your last period. The best way we can estimate fetal age....After doing thousands of measurements standards have emerged...So if you are 12 weeks and the baby is 10 weeks in size, it would indicate a smaller baby at this time...Just a way to follow growth of the baby. If I am off, I hope an OB wills set the record straight. ...Read more

Fetus measurements: 57mm 12 weeks gestation / 62mm 12 wks+4days gestation. Are measurements this precise to have this difference in size in 4 days?

Sort of: Yes, the measurements on average do correspond to these dates and they are fairly accurate, but not exact. Also it is dependent on how the ultrasound tech measures it. So there are plenty of sources of mild error. ...Read more

Can 12 week dating scan be off by 2 weeks? Could a 10 week gestational age fetus measure as big as 5.6cm?

Is a small gestational sac in relation to the fetus a sign of a chromosomal abnormality. Fetus 9w sac 7w. Doctor and research have me very worried.

Hard to answer...: At such an early stage, imaging and interpretation is hard.
There are associations between size and abnormalities.
But it is impossible to look at a minimally smaller size and conclude anything, especially chromosomal disorders.
It is best not to worry, but follow this serially and monitor progress. Your OB is the best judge of this and should advice you of intervention if at all needed. ...Read more

Fetal or embryo age: Because there is is no fetus until 2 weeks into a pregnancy (yes, it's an odd but standard way of counting dates), there is no bHCG until after 2 weeks gestational age. Also, the bHCG is not detectable until implantation, because the bHCG needs to be able to get from the embryo into the uterine lining, into the mother's circulation, into the mother's blood or urine sample. ...Read more

Measurement error?: It might be within measurement error - depending on how the image is taken of the fetus and gestational sac, maybe it's at an off-angle. It takes only a couple mm to account for a <1w difference in estimation. Regardless, I don't believe there is anything indicated to be done at this time but wait for next ultrasound. Maybe, miscarriage is: More likely. Not knowing how many weeks pregnant you are, it's difficult to give you more specific information. Usually the above consistent with early pregnancy loss. It is best to follow closely with Gyn/OB. Also try to avoid air travel or long car rides, trips in remote areas until this is settled. Never pregnant: Sounds like what is known as a mole. This is not a miscarriage, but rather was never a viable fetus. It simulates pregnancy, but there is no baby present, only the other gestational contents that will pass but sometimes require dilation and curettage. Sometimes this is the result of an unfertilized egg abberrantly dividing. ...Read more

Can the reading of a 10 week gestational age be wrong? Is it possible that the crown can be larger than other fetuses?

Yes: Prenatal ultrasounds are not 100% accurate. Readings also depend on the training and experience of the tech and the ob. Ultrasonography cannot detect certain anomalies in the fetuses. There have been cases when fetuses have been aborted to find out, in the post-mortem, that they were perfectly normal. But, ultrasound remains a great diagnostic tool and many lives have been saved by it. ...Read more
