Ask pediatrician: Although it is true that an ENT doctor performed the surgery, I would ask your pediatrician exactly what volume of fluid your child needs to ingest. Tonsillectomy is a very, very painful operation requiring at least 10 post-op recovery days. It is not uncommon for a 3 year old to refuse to swallow. Usually 10 days: I like my patients to avoid any strenuous activity that could result in raising their blood pressure and cause bleeding. Light exercise is ok (for my patients) after 10 days with heavier work outs at about 17 days. Most ENT doctors will vary somewhat on these recommendations. Not a fun time: Tonsillectomy can be a challenge for kids to recover from, and is even worse in adults. The patient will experience strep-throat-like pain (and also referred ear pain) with trouble eating for between 1 and 4 weeks-- a guesstimate of 1-2 weeks for under 12, 2 weeks for 13-20, 3 weeks for 21-31, 4 weeks for over 30. Same as kids: If you've had your tonsils completely out, you have a raw surface in your mouth. We tell people to eat a soft diet with minimal chewing so that there is less risk of encouraging bleeding from the raw muscle in the back of the throat.
