How long does it take for Claritin (loratadine) to take effect on hives??

How long does it take for Claritin (loratadine) to take effect on hives??

3 days to reach peak: Claritin (loratadine) (loratidine) takes 3 days to reach a steady state, so it could take that long for it to work on hives. Other non-drowsy antihistamines are a better choice: Allegra (fexofenadine) reaches peak effect within 2 hours and Zyrtec (cetirizine) reaches peak effect in 1-2 hours. If you see no benefit at all within 5 hours of taking these, they probably will not work for you. ...Read more

I took a clariton about an hour ago. I am getting hives on my neck. Can I take benydryl?

Yes, but: Claritin (loratadine) is effective for hives (urticaria) but it may take more than an hour to see the good effects. There is no harm in taking Benadryl (diphenhydramine) but realize that this antihistamine can cause drowsiness. Some allergists will use higher than usual doses of Claritin for control of hives. ...Read more

I'm taking zyrtec for severe case of hives. Was told to take Claritin (loratadine) in between if needed. I need more. Can I overdose if I take a second claritin (loratadine)?

You can: Ideally I would recommend Allegra 180mg in the morning and zyrtec 10mg at night and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) in between for breakthrough hives. Take 2 clartin a day is ok, but it may not be as effective as the other 2. ...Read more

True allergy to benadryl (diphenhydramine). Can I take claritin? Are they different enough that it shouldn't give me the instant hives that Benadryl (diphenhydramine) does?

Antihistamines: Both Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and Claritin are antihistamines and both are given to treat hives. I would suggest consulting a board certified allergist to review your history of your reaction to benadryl, (diphenhydramine) I doubt your hives are because of it. ...Read more

I drink alcohol while on Claritin (loratadine) which I take regularly for chronic hives. Is that okay/safe?

Most likely, but....: Mixing Claritin (loratadine) with alcohol may or may not cause problems. Generally claritin (loratadine) does not cause drowsiness, but people who develop drowsiness due to this drug are at an increased risk of experiencing negative effects due to such drug interaction; therefore they are advised to avoid drinking alcohol. ...Read more

Itchy hives from amoxicillin allergy - do I need to do anything or just take claritin (loratadine)?

Itchy hives from amoxicillin allergy - do I need to do anything or just take claritin (loratadine)?

Depends on severity: Claritin (loratadine) or zyrtec will help with the itching; a more severe rash may require treatment with prednisone. In most cases, the rash simply goes away within a few days of stopping the antibiotic. Treatment for the rash simply depends on how badly it bothers you. At any rate, you need to stop the antibiotic and notify your doctor if you get a rash while taking it. ...Read more

I got an adverse reaction to advil. Rash all over. Looks like urticaria. I took one 10 mg claritin (loratadine). Can I take another soon after? Painful itchy hives

Yes: If the hives are itchy, you may up the dose of Claritin (loratadine) to 4 x daily but this may cause some drowsiness. Allegra is another option. If the problem gets worse, you will need to see your doctor. Consult an allergist to find out whether you are "sensitive" to all NSAIDs or only to Advil. ...Read more

Will Claritin (loratadine) protect against drug allergies for a full 24hrs? Is it safe to use it if I've had hives from other, unrelated antihistamine pills?

Safe but...: It may last that long but may not be potent enough to control your hives. You may need to up the dose to 4x daily. It is unusual however to develop hives from taking any kind of antihistamine and thus I would suggest that you consult an allergist to sort this out. ...Read more

Gave my 2 year old son Claritin at bedtime for an outbreak of hives. Wasn't that effective. Safe to try Benadryl (diphenhydramine) tonight? He is also on daily flovent.

Not benadryl (diphenhydramine): Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is an inferior antihistamine and sometimes makes children crazy/dopey. You neglect to mention DOSE. This is crucial. You give no clue about the nature of "hives" which makes a huge difference. Does he still have "hives"? Best see a dermatologist for diagnosis and therapeutic evaluation. There are several kinds of hives and various remedies. Meanwhile you can try 5 to 10mg cetirizine (Zyrt ...Read more

Are you switching?: UWhat you didn't tell me is how you took the medications? If he if the Zyrtec wasn't working and you switch to the Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and then again to Claritin, that is not surprising because you're going from a stronger to a weeker medication. Now, if you added the three, you may be dealing with a the start of Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria and it would be helpful to explore other causes and treatments. ...Read more

I think have the hives because I have random red spots and swollen lips. Is Claritin good or Benadryl (diphenhydramine) better?

Zyrtec (cetirizine) (Cetitizine): If these are recurrent, see an allergiist for the propper diagnosis and treatment. For otc (over the counter) medication, most allergists prefer zyrtec (cetirizine) because it has more anti-inflamatory properties and lasts 24 hours. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) generally lasts 4 to 6 hours and causes more drowsiness, if the patient gets drowsy on zyrtec they might try Allegra (fexofenadine). ...Read more

I have had hives for 3 months. Benadryl, (diphenhydramine) claritin, atarax, zyrtec, chlor-trimeton made things worse. Zantac did not help. What should I do?

Troublesome problem: Chronic hives are difficult. If you can identify a food or other trigger that you could avoid you might have better luck. ...Read more
