Amoxicilin OD: One should try to never take more than the recommended dose of a medicine but fortunately this one has a fairly low risk of serious problems. Depends on reason: Each case is different. A patient can ask her own doctor about her individual case. Amoxicillin usually works for infections like strep throat, at 250mg 3 times a day, but 500mg 3 times a day is ok too. A doctor might prescribe more Amoxicillin if he thinks the patient's infection needs a bigger dose, or if he thinks the patient's intestines are not absorbing enough of the medication, etc... ...Read more
Hi, My 5 year old was prescribed to take 11ml of amoxicillin twice a day(400mg/5ml). He is 43 lbs and I feel like that's too much.
Sounds right: A 5-year old who is 43 lbs is about 20 kg. If he/she has an ear infection, sinus infection or pneumonia, the correct dose is 90 mg per kg per day dosed twice a day. 11 ml twice a day sounds correct. If it is not an ear, sinus, or lung infection he/she is being treated for, please ask the physician who prescribed the medication. ...Read more
My 3 year old son is 32pounds and was given amoxicillin 400mg/5ml 100ml to take 5ml twice a day for strep. Take all&finish. Isn't the dosage too much
No, that dose is: Fine. There is a dosing range depending on the child's weight, which is 40-80 mg/kg/day. He is 14.5 kg, so this dose is 55mg/kg/day, which is perfectly fine. ...Read more
My son who is 2 yrs old and around 35lbs was prescribed amoxicillin 400mg/5ml 10ml twice a day does that sound accurate? Worried it might be too much?
Not really: The dosing on this and most antibiotics depends on weight AND what you are treating. If it were a UTI or bronchitis where the abx gets into the germ areas easily we can use less, if ear infection we have to use more to get in. The dosing recommended for ear infections is 80-90 mg/kg/day. This would calculate to 716 mg twice a day or 1.78 tsp. Most just round up to 2 because the extra is not a problem ...Read more

Probably OK, but...: That's a larger than usual dose and would be likely to cause diarrhea and/or abdominal cramping. But not otherwise likely to be harmful. Discuss the dose (and possible change to 3 times daily) with the doctor or dentist who prescribed it. Good luck. ...Read more

Hi, I have excessive thin yellow discharge, and it smells antibiotic (amoxicillin) coz i just finished taking it during my menstrual period?
Could amoxicillin antibiotic help with white mucus in stool. It's an excessive amount and I fear I might have a bacterial infection.?
Not age based: The dose is not based on age, but on weight and condition being treated. Some conditions require a small dose of just 25mg/kg of body weight, while others require 90mg/kg of body weight. You should not be self dosing a 5-year-old. That's what your pediatrician is for — their expertise determines what dose your child needs for their specific condition and body weight. ...Read more
