How Many Mcg In A B12 Shot
Currently on b12 shots,1000mcg a day for 5 days,then 1000 mcg a week for 5 weeks and then 1000 mcg a month for 5 months.Can I use my iron sup. 210mg?
B12 and iron therapy: Yes. You. An take both, but it is important to know the reason for taking each. If you truly have deficiencies of both vitamins, then, yes, take them both. But if your B12 injections/capsules were prescribed solely for a B12 deficiency, the iron doesn't help. Your doctor - who has tour records - is in a better position to sort this out. ...Read more
Receive B12 shots mthly. Don't know cause of deficiency. Ok to supplement with sub-lingual B12 as well (5000 mcg)? I know it may be pointless.
Vegan?: The most common cause of B12 deficiency is lack of B12 in vegan diet or mal-absorption. Are you anemic or were you just told that you have a B12 deficiency by the person giving you the shots? You may not need as much B12 as you are being told if you are not anemic. Check with your md again to make sure you are still truly deficient. ...Read more
Get B12 shots mthly. Don't know cause of deficiency when got diagnosis level 169 , not vegan. Ok to supplement with sub-lingual B12 as well (5000 mcg)?
B12 deficiency is usually due to problems absorbing it rather than diet. Even if you take large doses hardly any of that dose is absorbed so it is quite safe. Even extremely high doses (like people getting shots daily for years) have never been shown to be toxic.
I advise the methylcobalamin form.

Depends: What are you hoping will improve? A lot of people notice improved energy after getting a b12, that's true, but the only people who really need them are those with a deficiency of B12 that cannot be overcome with pills. Sometimes B12 deficiencies can cause nerve problems and other nervous system disease, so B12 shots can help with those. ...Read more
Sure: B12 deficiency can have subtle symptoms, vague symptoms, fatigue, depression, as well as more serious neurol signs and symptoms (poor balance, hearing loss); can cause anemia (if also folate (folic acid) deficient). Not rare in elderly. Can usually store 5 years worth, so vegans don't commonly get it. Risk if stomach/pancreas, ileum diseases, maybe from acid reducers too. Methyl malonic acid test confirms. ...Read more
Some people never need B12 shots. Most docs recommend 1000 mcg (1 mg) once a month for those who are deficient but Paul Cheney MD advises as much as 30 mg of hydroxycobalamin a day for chronic fatigue patients, an extremely high dose but it is safe. I advise methylcobalamin 1 mg/week for many.

Anemia: The only reason to take b-12 shots is to treat pernicious anemia, which is caused by b-12 deficiency; or if you have a condition that makes if difficult for your body to absorb b-12. It is not going to give you tons of energy or help you lose weight unless you are deficient enough to be anemic. B-12 is available orally, which is good enough for most people. ...Read more

Grandma wants to know if B12 shots every month are worth the trouble? She thinks they make her feel better.
Which form of B12 is best for shots/injections and why?1. Cyannocobalamin2. Methylcobalamin3. Hydroxicobalamin
Usually Methyl but..: One thing is clear- Cyano is worst- it has small amounts of cyanide the body must detox & convert it to an active form; little is converted. Methyl is the active form, esp. good for those with MTHFR mutations & neurological symptoms & best for most. Some do better with Hydroxo. Experts agree Hydroxo better than Cyano but haven't seen many comparisons of Met vs. Hydr.See http://tinyurl. ...Read more

Don't be!: I am not sure why you are receiving B12 injections but your levels will slowly drift down. I have never seen toxicity due to elevated B12 levels, even that high. For further info, check the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University (micronutrient center) ...Read more
Had low B12 at level 150, had oral tabs which worked & level normal again but he still wants me to have B12 shots? Why? And why was it low? Thanks
B12: Your doc probably wants to build up your B12 stores. But, if your levels are normal it may not really be necessary. As to why they were low, lots of possibilities. Vegetarians are at risk because of dietary deficiency, excess alcohol, Crohn's/ GI diseases including intestinal parasites, long term use of acid reducing drugs like Zantac (ranitidine). ...Read more

If you are deficient in B12 and are unable to absorb the vitamin through oral intake, an injection would be appropriate. Even if you are deficient and have malabsorption, you may wish to try a sub lingual form of B12 supplement. It would be appropriate to discuss it with your doctor to see if you need B12 supplement and if you do, in what form.
