Yes. 300-500 Kcal: Your body requires from 300-500 calories a day to produce the equivalent of 3 bottles of formula a day. Not advisable: It's not a good idea to limit caloric intake to the point you are losing weight while breastfeeding. Some of that should happen naturally anyway with the breastfeeding. If you limit calories, you risk limiting nutrients your child needs. Not to say you should overdo it either and eat 10,000 calories a day. If needed, talk to a dietician or lactation specialist. ...Read more
Depends: Not knowing your height, weight and nutritional needs, it's only a guess. And at 48, that's amazing! assume that you would normally lose weight on a 1500 kcal diet. Breastfeeding moms burn up an extra 200-300 kcal a day producing breastmilk. Thus if you did some light exercise a day and ate 1500kcal, you would likely lose weight. Make sure to continue to drink lots fluids and calcium daily. ...Read more

My friend is eating 800-1, 000 calories a day and breastfeeding a toddler. Is this dangerously low? What health problems could it cause?
Sad problem: I have seen babies hospitalized for just such maternal diets. Most would get by for a while, since the mom's body often extracts nutrients from her bones/muscles/etc to give baby at least a minimum. This kind of diet leads to bone loss and malnutrition for both eventually. I wouldn't think twice about calling child and family services (most keep reports confidential)To have a 3rd party investigate ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Depends: Generally, if you are exclusively breastfeeding a single baby (not using any solids or formula), you need about 300 to 500 extra calories beyond what you ate prior to pregnancy. It's more important to eat to satisfy hunger than watch calories. Avoid eating for stress or fatigue. Eat a nutritious well-balanced diet because what you eat flavors your milk, so you are developing your baby's taste! ...Read more
