How Many Bowel Movements Should My Infant Have
The gastrointestinal tract starts at the mouth, travel down the tunnel (esophagus), which connects to the stomach, which then empties into the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum---the three parts of the small intestine (@25 feet). This empties into the colon or large intestine (about 5 feet), which then becomes the sigmoid colon, rectum and out the anus. So, every morsel eaten ...Read more
Varies : Every infant has different routine for passing stool, some may poop daily some every other day. Usually breast fed babies poop more often, after every feed. But regardless of the routine if baby is making normal texture stools and feeding well with normal weight gain, no need to worry. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Yes: Baby stool (poop) can be light colored, usually a blend of yellow with some brown or green. However, if the poop gets lighter and lighter in color, becoming a grey/white color, then there is a problem (not enough bile is mixing into the stool). A doctor will then need to evaluate the baby, to look for a liver or gall bladder problem causing the very light colored stool. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
BM in formula fed: Infant. They may go from several times a day to once a week. It is very much a variable thing. The idea that an infant has to go everyday or they are not " normal" is just not true. Think about how different we all are as adults. As long as baby does not have a rock hard tender abdomen, no fever, is eating well, and not tearing its little bum when it goes it is okay. What goes in will come out. ...Read more
Is it normal for my infant (4weeks old) who is breastfed to have 10-12 bowel movements a day and he cries and seems to be in serious pain?
Pain isn't normal: It is common for some breast fed babies to have a bowel movement with each feeding (sometimes, just small squirts). As long as it is soft, not hard balls, it is usually normal. But, if your baby really seems uncomfortable and cries excessively, he should be checked by his doctor. ...Read more
My breastfed infant is a month old and for the last few days she has been having 1-2 bowel movements a day. Is she constipated if so what to give her?
Probably OK: It is not unusual for babies to have change in stool pattern as they grow. . Also, it is normal for breastfed babies to have longer periods of time with no stools. Breast milk is the perfect baby food, thus there is less "waste" so to speak. If the baby's stomach is not distended, and he has a large soft stool infrequently this is not constipation requiring intervention. ...Read more
It depends: The problem is that babies aren't coordinated and don't open their sphincter immediately when they have a bowel movement. Also, it's harder to have a bowel movement when you are lying down. As long as the stool is soft, there really isn't a problem with them straining a bit. It doesn't necessarily mean that there is anything wrong. If the stool is hard balls, see your doctor for help. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Is it blood?: First, is it blood? Newborns especially can pass dark urine that when dried in a diaper can look like blood. Sometimes genuine blood can come from bloody vaginal discharge (normal in a newborn), or from a crack or fissure near the anus. Not sure what's going on? Go see the pediatrician for an exam. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
My 12 week old formula fed infant appears to be constipated. Is there anything I can do to help him have a bowel movement?
Yes, but...: Keep in mind the symptoms of constipation are by definition hard and painful to pass stools. Remember a little pushing and uncomfortableness is ok as long as the stools are soft. Also an every other day stool for some bottle fed babies is fine. Keep in mind the position babies are in as they stool, FLAT ON THEIR BACK. Can you imagine? One oz water and one oz apple juice once will help. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
