No one best: There are many options. It depends upon the location, age, tooth position, bite, finances, etc. You need to discuss this issue with the general dentist or prosthodonist taking care of the patient. Stainless steel crown from 2001. Has since flaked on biting surface. I do not want another crown. Can I have tooth extracted and get an implant?
Discuss with dentist: Every case, every patient, every dentist results in different time frames. There are so many factors at play here. Only a dentist who is familiar with your case can give you the answer you request. Generally, implants are placed on visit #1; time required for integration = 3 to 6 months; implants uncovered and restored =2 to 3 weeks. If bone grafting or other issues, more time may be required. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
6 months: A general rule of thumb is 6 months, some cases as early as 3 months. Gum tissue is ok at 8-12 week mark for a bridge, but implants need mature bone for stability. Some cases can be done within 6 weeks, but usually a longer implant than what was extracted is placed (using bone beyond the original missing tooth for stability). ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
No: If your tooth hurts, you may not need to lose it. Root canal therapy, done through the crown, may eliminate the pain and solve the problem. If the tooth is lost, then the existing crown will not be usable since the tooth on which it once fit is not the same shape at the gumline as the implant and thus its fit will be unacceptable. ...Read moreSee 3 more doctor answers

Is pulpitis & tooth abscess the same thing, if not which one is more dangerous? How long is to long to wait to get treatment for either one? Thanks
is a non infected inflammation of the contents of the tooth and generally means the tooth is injured or a cavity has reached a depth where infection is beginning. An abscess occurs when pulpitis is not treated (root canal treatment) Hope this is helpful and will follow for my dental colleague's answers to this question..

Is a healing cap the same as a healing abutment that protrudes through the gum? Just had 2 dental implants. Want to get a better understanding.
NO: Healing cap refers to a thin-topped screw which protects the top of the implant from debris/ ingrowth of tissue/bone. We have been using these from the inception of the root-form implant in the 60's.Later we learned that we could eliminate a surgical step by placing a healing abutment instead. This transverses the tissue and protrudes to a selected height, preserving access to the implant.Good Luck ...Read moreSee 4 more doctor answers
