EGD is pretty quick: Upper endoscopy uses an optical device on a flexible, steerable tube to examine esophagus, stomach, & upper small bowel. Often, biopsies are taken to rule out barrett's esophagus, eosinophilic esophagitis, h.Pylori bacteria, celiac sprue. A diagnostic study as such takes less than 5 minutes, during which you are sedated. Therapeutics (dilation, cautery, polypectomy, etc.) adds a few minutes more. ...Read more
Variable time: A colonoscopy and endoscopy at the same is called a bi-directional. There are variables that affect the amount of time such as skill of the operating physician, amount of fecal material and need for tissue samples. Generally the actual procedure takes 10 - 45 minutes. After the procedure it takes approximately 30 mins to 3 hours to recover from the sedating medications. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

They told my husband that he couldn't eat anything the entire day before. Isn't that too long? He's having an endoscopy as well.
Not too long -normal: If he is having a colonoscopy he would need take medication to help with the clean out to prepare his colon for the scope typically the day before. The doctor has to be able to maneuver the colonoscope thru the colon and inspect the entire colon clearly. If he eats there will be food and stool still present impairing his view using the scope. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Short sedation: EGD(upper endoscopy) can be as short as 5 minutes, with biposies most of them accopmlished in ~15 min. Colonoscopy takes longer, most fit in the timeframe of 20-40 minutes. Due to nature of the drug(s) used the recovery may vary but usually is pretty fast and free of side effects. ...Read more

MAC for anesthesia : Assuming you are otherwise healthy, nost likely a single IV drug called propofol will be used under the care of trained anesthesia personnell. This is called MAC or Monitored Anesthesia Care where you are deeply sedated yet breathing on your own to allow the endoscope to pass into your esophagus and stomach. Recovery is usually less then 15min to wake up and dicharged in an hour to home. ...Read more
I'm getting endoscopy and colonoscopy on 18th, do I need to avoid alcohol ? How long before procedure do I need to stop drinking ?
Ask your doctor: You certainly need to avoid it after midnight the night before the procedure, since you will likely have sedation with these tests, but the final arbiter on how long you should be without alcohol before the test is the gastroenterologist who is going to perform the tests. It should be in the instructions you get before the procedure, and if it isn't, you should ask. Good luck. ...Read more
