Sero-conversion: The whole concept of delayed sero-conversion dates back to old & sloppy tests. PCR testing now will show virus in the blood with or without antibodies. If you need to cling to the old adages...at 6 months..99.99% of the population will have developed antibodies after an exposure..thus the 6 month window. I believe a colleague of mine Lyssette Cardona, MD is in Dubai..she's one of the best!! ...Read more

Second, if there is a high risk exposure one can get a viral RNA test after 21 days that is 100% accurate. Third: the antibody testing that is routine for HIV can miss infection for up to six months after exposure. ...Read more

How long should I wait to get an accurate HIV test after (maybe) got exposed to it? And how long does the test itself take to give back the results?

How long should I wait for STD test and HIV test? 16days ago no symptoms.. Other then stomach burn and cough for 2weks. Just want a peace of mind.

Unprotected sex: Go see your doctor, planned parenthood (yes, even for men) or county health/std clinic for testing. Get tested as soon as possible if you have symptoms. Then get repeat testing as sometimes it takes a while to turn positive if you don't have symptoms. All depends upon which std you have. Is 2 months past the possible exposure date adequate time for a home HIV test and homeHepatitis B/C test to be reliable? More wait time or is this ok?

Test yourself now: At your age, you should ask your physician for a yearly HIV check, and probably you will get liver enzymes that would clue you to having acquired hepatitis. Here's an idea, Oliver -- if the person with whom you shared love is worth it, they'll be glad to let you know whether they know their status, and take the test as well. Best wishes. ...Read more

I've read many times a negative HIV test at 6 weeks is very unlikely to change at 12 weeks. Why do they keep saying wait 3 months?

I've read many times a negative HIV test at 6 weeks is very unlikely to change at 12 weeks. Why do they keep saying wait 3 months?

To be sure: It can take more than several weeks for some people to develop an antibody to HIV, but less than 3 months. So by retesting at 3 months or later there would be little or no chance of missing that a particular person has acquired the virus. ...Read more
