How Long To Decrease Mcv With Abstaining From Alcohol
I don't believe: A precise answer to this is known. This blood marker used to track abstinence takes a long time to normalize. The rise in MCV is a direct result of the effect of alcohol on erythroblast/red blood cell development. The half--life of the abnormal RBCs is 40 days...40 days after abstinence half of the abnormal RBC population would be extinguished. Obviously, normalization would take even more time. ...Read more
Hello, my MCV lvl is 36.8. Everything else is normal. I was stung by a bee and I went to the doctor. I drank alot before. Could alcohol be the reason?
Your MCHC, perhaps?: Your MCV isn't 36. If this is your MCHC, it's very slightly above most labs' reference ranges, and since these ranges are set so that a few percent of healthies fall outside on either side, I wouldn't give it another thought. ...Read more
See below : Excessive alcohol intake can cause liver disease which can cause macrocytic anemia. Also, people who drink lots of alcohol could have nutrient and vitamin deficiencies such as vitamin b 12 and folic acid, and deficiencies from these can also cause macrocytic anemia. It's okay to have a drink now and then though. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
What kind of problems can result from high mcv? I have moderated my alcohol intake and begun taking a multi-vitamin to help with folate (folic acid) and b-12.
You're correct : Large (macrocytic) red blood cells usually result from a deficiency of vitamin B12 or Folic Acid (folate). If you are taking those and your macrocytes don't improve, you may not be able to absorb the vitamins from you GI tract. You may wish to see your doctor again or consult a hematologist if things don't improve. ...Read more

Too much and yet....: Not enough info. Labs must be interpreted in light of your clinical situation. Your thyroid appears normal. Your red blood cells are uniformly and mildly enlarged. This may be that you had B12 deficiency and recently started B12. There are some red cells in your urine and some in your stool? These need explanation. See the doc who ordered these. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
My dad has macrocytic anemia. 10 hemoglobin, 29 hematocrit, 14 platelets, MCV 107. Tests for kidney, liver, wbc, mch, vit B12 are normal. Why? No alcohol
Depends: Time to complete recovery depends on how bad the liver was hit by the alcohol. It could be as quick as a week or two if mild, to months if there is a history of liver disease. If there is permanent scarring, your liver may never fully recover. In general, you can expect the liver to start the healing process as soon as you stop drinking. ...Read more
How long does it take for the liver to repair itself after abstaining from alcohol? Drank 5 drinks 3 nights a week for 3 years. Bilirubin was 2.4
Really fast: Sober up and your liver enzymes can be okay in a few days if you haven't given yourself alcoholic hepatitis or cirrhosis. Keep up the good work and even if you have one of the advanced forms, it can often self-heal. I'm really happy for you. So is everybody who loves you. Congratulations. ...Read more
Depends: This depends on how much you drink and the period over which you drink it; also, it correlates with sex (males metabolize better than females); how much you've eaten; food delays the absorption of alcohol; it depends on your tolerance: if you drink regularly in a moderate fashion, you will metabolize alcohol more efficiently;. ...Read more
Dose dependent: No one knows for absolute certain. Like most toxins, the more alcohol ingested the higher the risk of problems. No one knows for sure if and where there is a 'threshhold effect, ' in other words below that amount there is no impact. I usually counsel patients that a few drinks per week is unlikely to have an important effect on fertility. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
