Strep or viral: A rapid throat culture is the best way to check for strep which would require antibiotics. If the test is negative, it's most likely a viral infection. Mono is less likely unless the symptoms are days old. Antibiotics are not used for viral throat infections. ...Read more

Usually the: antibiotic starts to work for strep within 24 hours. However, if you have a concurrent viral illness, the antibiotic won't help and you will have to heal on your own. Strep throat: Even though you have been treated the pus is signed of dead cells and as long as the rest of the symptoms are resolving or completely resolved does not mean the infection is not better. I would wait a couple of days and if every other symptoms is resolved this should go away soon. If the symptoms are the same or worse you might need an alternative antibiotic. ...Read more

The other option is to wait until the screen/ culture comes back, often up to 3 days and often with questions about processing. Many physicians, rightly or wrongly treat every throat as strep.
