Sorry you're not feeling well! Costochondritis can actually last for over a year. Stretching and NSAIDs like ibuprofen can be very beneficial (I suspect you're probably already trying these); sometimes, however, an injection of local anesthetic is necessary for cases that last many months.

The duration of your symptoms for years makes costochondritis less likely, but may still be contributing if waxing and waning symptoms.
Trial of steroid burst/rapid taper may be adequate to assess if inflammatory component is contributing.
