As you know anencephaly is multifactorial, with folate (folic acid) deficiency as well as genetic factors. There is an emerging genetics we are learning about and you certainly want to consider consultation with genetics and see your OB for a visit as well. Anencephalic newborns are devoid of any chance of meaningful interaction with the environment and never attain consciousness. Comfort care is all that is ethically permissible for these dramatic cases.
