Oseltamivir (Definition)

The brand name is tamiflu (oseltamivir). It is a prodrug, which means it is inactive until metabolized by a person's body into the active form. It blocks neuraminidase, an enzyme in influenza virus; by doing this, it prevents the flu virus from detaching from the host cell and slows the spread of the virus. It comes in a tablet form, as ...Read more

Take good precaution: It is hard to say if you are still contagious, maybe not. However it is never a bad idea to take good precautions such as washing hands, stop hand-shaking or hugging, cough in your arm. I don't think you need to quarantine yourself, it sounds like you are feeling pretty good to be running errands ...Read more

You all still may be: Contagious. Tamiflu (oseltamivir) can shorten the course of the illness symptoms, but your respiratory secretions probably still have some infectious particles. I would still try to keep your other children away from the baby at least until all symptoms are totally gone for 24 hours...and for you and them, good hand washing. Ideally if you have an option of someone else doing the care for the baby, also do that. ...Read more

I had the swine flu. Got tamiflu (oseltamivir) which worked and I feel better no more fever. Today is the fifth day since it started on sat am I still contagious?

Probably not: The virus is transmitted via water droplets in your coughs/sneezes. If you are not coughing/sneezing etc...And that you took tamiflu (oseltamivir) already, it is not likely that you are contagious now. But, caution is always advised. Cover your coughs/sneezes and wash your hands...
Good luck. ...Read more

Flu: Technically the flu is considered contagious for 5-10 days after the start of symptoms. Basic infection control practices: good hand washing, don't share drinks, utensils, cough or sneeze into a tissue or into your shirt sleeve. Since your 7 yo is no longer symptomatic (no more cough?) then the rest should be easy. ...Read more

Up to 7 days: The shedding of the virus in your secretions peaks in the first 3 days of the illness but persists up to 7 days regardless of the use of tamiflu (oseltamivir). While the shedding diminishes as the fever drops, it can persist and the need for isolation depends on the situation. ...Read more

I just finished a course of tamiflu (oseltamivir) for swine flu. How long before I start to feel better?

Can not predict: It depends on how ill you have been, how early in the illness you started the tamiflu, (oseltamivir) whether you have had any complications such as pneumonia, whether the diagnosis was correct, and whether you have any other illnesses you may feel better in a few days, or your recovery may take several weeks. Obviously see you doctor if you do not feel better or if you still have fever. ...Read more
