How Long Is Claritin In Your System
One day: Claritin (loratadine) 10 mg pill is dosed once daily. That's because it's effect will last about 24 hours, after that it's antihistamine effect wanes. However, Claritin is metabolized by the liver into another active compound called desloratadine, so the antihistamine effect can last a while. This is why most allergists have patients stop their Claritin a number of days before skin testing them. ...Read more
3-5 days: The average half-life of Claritin (loratadine) is 8 hours meaning that half the dose is gone/metabolized after 8 hours and after 8 more hours another half is gone. Doing the math, the Claritin (loratadine) is effectively out of a person's system in 3-5 days, except in geriatric patients it could possibly take up to 10 days. ...Read more
My 6mo old was prescribed loratadine/ambroxol. she seems very drowsy, why? and how long will it stay i her system?
Mgt: If your baby is more drowsy/lethargic, not feeding well, please see your ED. This may not be related to the medications, but rather to an illness. The ambroxol should be discontinued until further evaluation is completed. For excessive mucus production, nasal saline drops and gentle suction is the only treatment advised in this age group, unless there is a tracheostomy or some other problem. ...Read more
If i take zertec for a long period 10mo then switch to Claritin (loratadine) can my sinuses become dependent on zyrtec and over produce mucus w/o zyrtec in system?
Unlikely: While the "good" effect of zyrtec (cetirizine) will be gone in several days, there is no known problem of "rebound" or worsening symptoms when stopping oral antihistamines. More likely, is the continued exposure to the allergens. Here is where an allergist will be able to assist. ...Read more

How much allegra is safe on a daily basis? My system needs a break from claritin (loratadine) and zyrtec apparently, but 1 allegra is not working fully.
If i stop taking Claritin (loratadine) will the side effects go away overnight and by that i mean in a 24 hour period? Or will it take a couple of days for all the medicine to be out of my system?
Up to 1 hour: Claritin (loratadine) can work relatively quickly in most people. That is, it usually works within 30 minutes. However, in some people it may take up to 60 minutes to have its full effect. If it is not working within that time, or if the duration of effect becomes less and less, seeing an allergy specialist for allergy testing would be recommended as other treatments may be more effective. ...Read more

How long does"24-hour" loratidine (i.E. Claritin) really stay with you? Maybe 16 hours, you think?
Great question!: Loratidine is metabolized to it's active metabolite, desloratidine which has a half life of 28 hours (range 9-96). This is very long acting but there is variability among individuals based on how your liver metabolizes it which is genetically determined. If you take a drug for 5 half lives, you develop a steady state blood level ie it's more effective if you take it every day than just occ doses. ...Read more
What are the differences between loratadine and desloratidine in how well it works or how long it lasts?
Take one, get both: When you take loratidine, your liver breaks it down to desloratine which is actually responsible for the anti-histamine effects you need. Desloratidine has a much longer effect (28 hours) than loratidine (8 hours) which is why loratidine lasts such a long time. ...Read more

Prob ok: Antihistamines have been around for decades, and certainly many more potent than loratadine. They say worldwide the most common drug taken is diphenhydramine, mostly for the sedative properties (as a sleep aid). Antihistamines can affect certain types of glaucoma, and accentuate urine retention in those with prostate issues and dry mucous membranes, but usually not so much with loratadine per say. ...Read more
