How Long Is A Course Of Trimethoprim
Get 2nd opinion: This drug has been used but from my reading, a tetracycline is preferred as much safer. An antibiotic should never be the sole treatment for acne, and people are recommending now that courses of antibiotics not be longer than three months. The fact that you asked also raises concern in my mind about your relationship to your physician. I suggest a second opinion. Let's find what's right for you. ...Read more

There is some controversy about how long to continue meds. Discuss with your doc. ...Read more

I have 3 more pills of Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) to take - how long until my COC (Yaz) is fully effective again? Should I use a secondary method of contraception?
Yes: Trimethoprim, one of the ingredients in bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim), (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) mildly induces the liver to process the hormones in birth control pills faster, theoretically reducing their effectiveness. Depends: Septra (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) is a pretty good abx for uti, but sometimes there are causes to which septra (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) does not work due to resistance. Other times the bladder wall can be irritated from the infection causing pain. But if you continue to have burning sensation with septra (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim), I would advise further f/u care and perhaps a urine culture to determine whether or not there is resistance. ...Read more
