How long can I be on sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim for acne?

Get 2nd opinion: This drug has been used but from my reading, a tetracycline is preferred as much safer. An antibiotic should never be the sole treatment for acne, and people are recommending now that courses of antibiotics not be longer than three months. The fact that you asked also raises concern in my mind about your relationship to your physician. I suggest a second opinion. Let's find what's right for you. ...Read more

I get insomnia from bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) ds 800-160. How long after taking a pill might this impact me?

See answer: The half-life of a drug is the time it takes for a drug to lose half (50%) of its pharmacologic or physiologic properties. The half-life of the two drug ingredients in Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) are 8 and 10 hrs. Therefore, after 5 half-lifes or 40 and 50 hrs for the 2 drugs, 97% of the drugs will be out of your system (~2 days). One would expect any related insomnia to be short? ...Read more

Standard therapy: Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) is a standard therapy for bladder reflux starting after 2 months of age and used as needed. It's ease of storage and use trumps Amoxicillin and it is more palatable than the furadantin. It has been used in this fashion for UTI suppression for decades and is commonly used long term. There is some controversy about how long to continue meds. Discuss with your doc. ...Read more

How long after having 2 shots of vodka should I wait before I start taking my bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) for abscess on my thigh?

Problem: You should not be drinking alcohol, now. Interaction with Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) is only one issue, not based on when you take it, and not the pre-eminent issue. I have 3 more pills of Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) to take - how long until my COC (Yaz) is fully effective again? Should I use a secondary method of contraception?

I have 3 more pills of Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) to take - how long until my COC (Yaz) is fully effective again? Should I use a secondary method of contraception?

Yes: Trimethoprim, one of the ingredients in bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim), (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) mildly induces the liver to process the hormones in birth control pills faster, theoretically reducing their effectiveness. The half life of bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) is only 8-10 hours but the enzymes that are induced take longer to return to normal levels. The usual recommendation is to use a backup method for 7 days after finishing bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim). ...Read more

Went to dr thru. For a UTI and they gave me septra (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim). I take it every 12 hours. And it stil hurts when I pee. How long should this med. Take to work?

Depends: Septra (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) is a pretty good abx for uti, but sometimes there are causes to which septra (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) does not work due to resistance. Other times the bladder wall can be irritated from the infection causing pain. But if you continue to have burning sensation with septra (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim), I would advise further f/u care and perhaps a urine culture to determine whether or not there is resistance. ...Read more
