I'm on levothyroxine. Can you tell me about T3 (liothyronine) replacement for many persistent hypothyroid symptoms even with normal TSH blood test results?

I'm on levothyroxine. Can you tell me about T3 (liothyronine) replacement for many persistent hypothyroid symptoms even with normal TSH blood test results?

How normal is normal: 1st things 1st. How normal is your tsh? Just below upper limit of normal? Or below 2? There are some studies suggesting that some people respond better to desiccated porcine thyroid rather than levothyroxine. However, you didn't specify your hypothyroid symptoms, many of which overlap w/taking propanolol, wellbutrin (bupropion) ; vyvanse. Talk to your doc about switching or increasing dose w/close monitoring. ...Read more

I am 20 weeks pregnant. My blood test results: TSH: 2.61 FT3: 2.38 FT4: 0.59. It seems FT4 is low. What should I do? Do I need to use medicine?

I am 20 weeks pregnant. My blood test results: TSH: 2.61 FT3: 2.38 FT4: 0.59. It seems FT4 is low. What should I do? Do I need to use medicine?

See below: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, the result of TSH and free T4 do not comport. You should talk to your doctor about repeating the test, before considering thyroid replacement medication.
Wish you good health and a healthy baby! ...Read more

I have blood test results that show low calcium levels, low PTH levels, and confirmed hypothyroidism due to high TSH. What does this mean?

I have blood test results that show low calcium levels, low PTH levels, and confirmed hypothyroidism due to high TSH. What does this mean?

Calcium PTH, Thyroid: Confirmed hypothyroidism s a clear message that the TSH is working hard to increase thyroid hormone but without success.
Treatment will have to be with thyroid hormone taken by mouth.
Unlikely, but the surgeon might want to remove your thyroid gland since it is not working properly. ...Read more

How long does it take for a new level of Synthroid (thyroxine) to take effect so that I can get a repeat blood test for my TSH which was 0.01?

How long does it take for a new level of Synthroid (thyroxine) to take effect so that I can get a repeat blood test for my TSH which was 0.01?

At least a month: If your TSH was 0.01 you were definitely taking too much thyroid hormone so I assume your doctor reduced your dose. I usually wait 1-2 months before repeating the free T4 and TSH on the new dose by which time the tests should have stabilized ...Read more

Can HRT affect a TSH blood test? If so how long should I stop it before test?

Yes: Estrogen replacement can affect TSH levels in way similar to oral contraceptives and pregnancy, by increasing the need for more thyroid hormone production. This can result in high TSH levels indicating that you have underlying primary hypothyroidism or if you are already on thyroid hormone, that you need more. There is no need to stop hrt, just adjust the dose of thyroid hormone. ...Read more

Overdose of levothyroxine? I took a blood test and my TSH level is 0.174 mul and I also take 75mcg of levothyroxine, what's wrong!?

Overdose of levothyroxine? I took a blood test and my TSH level is 0.174 mul and I also take 75mcg of levothyroxine, what's wrong!?

Need dose adjustment: Whenever someone has low thyroid hormone the dose of levothyroxine may need to be adjusted occasionally. If you are on 75 mcgs and the TSH is low then your dose needs to be adjusted down a little bit. Tsh stimulates the thyroid to make more hormone so when it is low there is a bit too much around. If TSH is high then the dose needs to be adjusted upwards. It is common to have to make these changes. ...Read more

I got a blood test done and the results reflect the following: TSH. 328, HDL 32, triglycerides 215, alkaline 23, and blood sugar 107. What you think?

More information: Why were the tests done? Was specimen drawn after an overnight fast? If so the triglycerides are high and so is the blood sugar. Hdl is low. None of the findings are diagnostic of a disease, except, that blood sugar suggests a pre-diabetic state. It is best to discuss the results and treatment with the doctor who ordered the tests. ...Read more

Puzzling: Your initial TSH was only borderline high and it should have gone down after starting thyroid hormone so it is puzzling that the TSH has increased to 19. Most of the time different brands of hormone have the same potency but it is possible that the thyronom you were given is less potent. You could either try the Eltroxin again or stay on thyronom and increase to 137 mcg then retest in 3-4 mo ...Read more

Took blood test and tsh. 01. t3 (liothyronine) 12.5. T4. 3.7. Referred to endocrinologist, but have to wait 2 weeks. Is this too long to wait with symptoms?

Hard to say.: Your blood testing is consistent with hyperthyroidism, of course - fast thyroid function. If your symptoms seem to be worsening during this two week period, then I would not hesitate to get to the Endocrinologist or back to your regular MD to start medical treatment, at least. There are medications that can control the symptoms in the short term until a treatment plan is clarified. ...Read more

What is the reason of low body temperature. How I can treat it, what type of blood test to do, my tsh, t3, (liothyronine) T4 results are normal.

Can having my period during blood test affect results of a thyroid test for TSH & FT4 or does it not have an affect?

Can having my period during blood test affect results of a thyroid test for TSH & FT4 or does it not have an affect?

Not significant: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, the circumstance you described should not affect the result materially.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form.

I had a blood test, the TSH level was 5.69. I am seeing my primary care physician today. Do I need life long meds? Can I breastfeed? Can I conceive?

Take a deep breath: Your primary care doc can answer many of these questions for you, but the answers are maybe, yes and yes. Pregnancy in patients with hypothyroidism (which you may not have) goes well as long as you take the meds (that you might not need), as does breastfeeding. ...Read more
