Is there a problem with switching from topamax to generic topiramate for seizure control?

Is there a problem with switching from topamax to generic topiramate for seizure control?

Generics: Absolutely yes. Generics only need to have anywhere from 80-120% bioavailability when compared to the brand. More often than not what you will get is less than the brand and hence control of seizures will be less and the dose will have to be adjusted. While generics are cheaper you get what you pay for -you cannot pay yugo prices and expect a cadillac. ...Read more

Why may a dr prescribe topiramate ex-rel to a patient with no seizures, due to this med havin severe effects an not supose to take if u have ostioperos?

It has other uses: FDA indications for topiramate include seizures and prophylaxis (prevention) of migraines. Topiramate has also been used successfully as treatment for alcoholism, methamphetamine addiction, and cocaine addiction. It also helps prevent antipsychotic-induced weight gain and may be useful for promoting weight loss. Psychiatrists prescribe topiramate for a variety of disorders. ...Read more

Can I take ativan while still taking keppra (levetiracetam) and topamax for my seizures?

Likely fine: Doubt you will encounter any profound problem, but all three can cause drowsiness, and together, you may feel a bit doped up, but since Ativan (lorazepam) has a short half-life, not a continuous problem. ...Read more

I take topamax (topiramate) 150 mg per day for headaches/seizures. Is it possible those med adjustments cause my hypokalemia?

Yes its possible.: Yes indeed, topamax (topiramate) can cause infrequent side effects of dehydration, low potassium (hypokalemia), and low calcium (hypocalcemia). Severeal medical studies support this finding. Definitely discuss this with your doctor and see if a different medication might be better for you. ...Read more

Can birth control pills still be taken when topiramate is taken for seizures?

Can birth control pills still be taken when topiramate is taken for seizures?

Not really a problem: But, recognize that there may be drug-drug interaction, with the possiblity of the hormonal levels dropping and creating an inadequate protective effect, and increased risk of pregnancy, or perhaps an effect on the topirimate. Can solve this easily, by switching to drugs which do not interact such as keppra, lyrica, vimpat, (lacosamide) neurontin. ...Read more

I didn't take topamax (topiramate) for seizure. I took it for nerve damage. After stop taking for 10 days im dizzy & blurred sight. Took for 7 yrs. Is this normal?

Topamax (topiramate) side effects: Sometimes topamax (topiramate) may cause changes with the vision, but this is rare, and it occurs when it is used regularly. It should not be causing these symptoms now.

Two common causes of your symptoms are increased blood pressure and increased blood sugar. I recommend you have those checked before you look for other causes.

Hopefully you feel better soon! ...Read more

I take tegretol (seizure free!) and my dr wants me to switch to topamax (topiramate) to stop side effects. Is topamax (topiramate) as effective in fully preventing seizures?

Yes, but: Both drugs have potential adverse effects, and you should realize that the topamax (topiramate) will be effective, but when meds are switched, there is risk of withdrawal seizures. I take 75mg topamax (topiramate) 2/day for bipolar. Yesterday I had 4 glasses of wine and had a simple partial seizure while drunk, with motor/visual disturbances. Does this mean I'm prone to seizures?

See your doctor: Not sure why you are so confident that it was a "simple partial seizure." four glasses of wine is too many on one occasion, especially for a woman, and especially for someone being treated for bipolar disorder. You need a full neurological evaluation, especially an eeg and probably a ct scan, as well as several different blood tests. If you didn't see a doctor after this event, you should asap. ...Read more

Go to the ER: I would imagine that you have been to the emergency room many times in the past. However, in a situation like this, I would not hesitate to order a CT scan of your head if you presented to my emergency room in order to make sure that you do not have hydrocephalus, which can be life-threatening. ...Read more

I am taking topiramate for migraine and now I have seizures can it be cause of the meds and if I stop taking them can I still have the seizures?

Get doc's advice: The topiramate is fine for both migraine and epilepsy control, as long as you are not experiencing bad side effects, but topiramate does not cause seizures for anyone, and if you stop, you will have more headaches and more seizures. This could be very risky. You need to uncover cause of szs, and plan appropriate therapeutic interventions. ...Read more

My 7 year old grandson has been off topamax (topiramate) for 25 days and no seizures. Has the danger period passed.?

How is lamictal believed to work for seizure disorders? What might it mean if your seizures respond better to lamictal than topamax (topiramate)?

Lamictal: The mechanism of action is related to inactivation of voltage dependent sodium channels. Lamictal reduces the release of glutamate and aspartate, excitatory brain transmitters.
An individual's seizure may respond to one medicaition or another depending on unique properties. It does not mean that one antiseizure medication is better than another in general, only personally, . ...Read more

Taking topiramate (250mg 2x daily) and vimpat (lacosamide) (150mg 2x daily) and still getting bad migraines and generalized seizures. Do I need to try diff drug?

Taking topiramate (250mg 2x daily) and vimpat (lacosamide) (150mg 2x daily) and still getting bad migraines and generalized seizures. Do I need to try diff drug?

See HA specialist: Once a diagnosis of migraine has been made, effective treatment involves 3 specific strategies: 1) patient education, 2) nonpharmacological 3) pharmacological (medical) management. Prophylactic therapy is recommended for the chronic and disabling migraine. Some migraine patients are prone to medication overuse headaches. See orofacial pain or headache specialist. ...Read more

Doc said stop taking st. John's wort b/c it would "mess up blood levels of topamax (topiramate) & cause breakthrough seizures". How does an herb do that though?

All medications: Were made from herbs & plants until the era of man-made synthetic drugs. St. John's Wort alters levels of chemicals produced by your brain & competes with your prescription medication to be metabolized by your liver enzymes. People who take it within 2 weeks of starting a stimulant for ADHD can have a hypertensive crisis. Don't take any vitamin, herb, OTC or prescription med without asking 1st. ...Read more

Niece had seizures since oct 2012, dr done EEG and said was generalised seizures (drop attack).Prescribed topamax, (topiramate) are there any good med to treat this?

Topamax (topiramate) helpful: Yes. Topamax (topiramate) has recently been shown to be effective for drop attacks (atonic seizures). Not all seizure medications are helpful with these types of seizures. Felbamate, valproate, and Lamotrigine have been used for drop attacks for a while. New studies show that topamax (topiramate) also works. Hope this helps! ...Read more

Jeff24, U need help: I see that you posted many questions all related to your "seizure" which you may have had 14 yrs ago. Despite multiple answers from different docs, you are not satisfied and seem to obsess about this issue quite abit. Topamax (topiramate) is actually used to treat both seizure and migraine. If I have been seizure free on 400mg of Dilantin for 14 years with levels of 3.1 does it make sense to switch to topamax (topiramate) like dr says?

If I have been seizure free on 400mg of Dilantin for 14 years with levels of 3.1 does it make sense to switch to topamax (topiramate) like dr says?

Level is too low: You are on Dilantin and your level is below the therapeutic range to control the seizures, and you have been seizure free for 14 years
in my view you can discuss with your doctor or the neurologist and try to come off the dilantin, but you have to do under medical supervision. There are good chances you will not have any more seizures if you stop dilantin. ...Read more

If I am seizure free for 14 years on low level Dilantin is there any point to switch to topamax (topiramate) my dr says cause the Dilantin is doing nothing?

It depends: If you are really seizure free for 14 years on any dose of Dilantin and tolerating it well, you may not need to switch. Furthermore ask whether you really need Dilantin at all. Some patients can have good control with low level of dilantin. It depends on the kind of epilepsy you have. If no seizures, there is no real advantage to switching to topamax (topiramate) or other meds. ...Read more
