How long does the sputum culture take?

How long does the sputum culture take?

Hours to weeks: Most bacteria take hours to days to appear in culture. Bugs that cause TB and related infections can take up to 2 months. Some bugs can't be grown in culture at all. It's important to remember that not every bug in a culture is an infection and a negative culture cannot exclude some infections. Cultures are like every other test, with false positive and negatives that your doctor has to interpret. ...Read more

If you have been exposed to someone with MRSA of the sputum and lung, and that person coughed right in your face all day, how long does it take for mr?

No guarantee: Exposure does not mean infection. Yes, it is a prerequisite for it, but your immune system may take it in stride, or the bacteria may not have been transmitted. Usually, bacterial illnesses onset within a few (3-5) days of exposure, so if not feeling ill, likely will not become from this exposure. ...Read more

Barium swallow: Barium swallow may miss esophageal cancer. Upper endoscopy is the gold standard for diagnosis. Coughing up blood is not a characteristic symptom of esophageal cancer but an examination of the mouth, posterior nasal area and throat as well as a tracheal, bronchial and lung evaluation if coughing up blood occurs. ...Read more

What's a sputum culture?

See below: Sputum is the mucus that you cough up. A culture means that the specimen (in this case sputum) is plated on a plate with growth medium and incubated to test for any bacteria (or fungi). My sputum culture came back as gram positive cocci...what could i have? I've had two rounds of antibiotics and im still coughing

GPC: Gram positive cocci refer to the description of the bacteria. Sputum test negative awaiting the culture in 3 weeks. How like to be positive? I have TB latent but with symptoms for active TB.

Why do you ask?: Expect to wait eight weeks to be certain. The decision, in the meantime, is whether to treat you for presumptive tuberculosis. Make the decision with your physician's guidance. I had a fever and x-ray shadow, weight loss and positive PPD but never grew any bugs; treatment still probably saved my life. Best wishes. ...Read more

How can dr advise TB medicine. If it shows negative in every test. Sputum, broncography, cultural and even PCR too.

Required by law?: Here's one possibility. In some jurisdictions, anyone with a positive TB skin test who has not been treated is required to take anti-tb medicines. This is bolt stupid and is of course invented by politicians rather than physicians. I'm sorry this has happened. Good luck. ...Read more

I always have purulent sputum (sometimes green, sometimes yellow, sometimes brown) all winter long. Should i sheck up with doctors?

Yes: Absolutely. You should see a pulmonary specialist. If you have purulent sputum daily, at your age, your doctor needs to take a history and be prepared for other tests in case that doesn't lead to an answer. Probably allergies, but there could be asthma, cystic fibrosis and other much rarer problems behind this. If you smoke, step one is stop. Get help from your doctor with this. ...Read more

My sputum culture had klebsiella oxytoca, had no symptoms my sputum was tested for something else. Now I have a cold, possible to get k. Pneumoniae?

In general, no!: K oxytoca is a strong pathogen, and may cause serious infections, among them, pneumonia. Although it colonizes the nasal passages, it's presence in the sputum can be a warning sign, but if you are healthy and have a normal immune status, it should not progress. Be vigilant for any sudden changes in your condition and seek a consultation if your "cold" worsens. ...Read more

Sputum culture showed normal flora.gram stain showed mod.amt of gram positive and neg. Bacilli and mod.amt of gram positive cocci.few wbc.concerns?

No.: From your description, it sounds like the diagnosis was normal flora present. The bacilli and cocci with few WBCs are just describing that. Normal flora is a mixed population like that described. When one has an infection, the causative organism will predominate and will likely be the only thing present. There will also usually be numerous WBCs as these are your cells that fight infection. ...Read more

I had a blood test for TB pos. Result, sputum tests, neg. Still waiting for others to come back, should I take the cocktail meds? I think not.

Depends: If you have any symptoms suggesting tb, or anything on your x-ray, then do it. The new blood tests aren't for distinguishing active infection from past exposure. Unfortunately, politicians have gotten involved and may force you to take medication despite your already having contained TB bugs years ago. I've had a few colleagues force to do it. It's dumb but you may not have a choice. Good luck. ...Read more
