Can I get botulism or listeria from undercooked chicken? What are the chances and how long should I wait to get it?

Can I get botulism or listeria from undercooked chicken? What are the chances and how long should I wait to get it?

Yes and no: Botulism, no. You can't get that from chicken, it only grows inside improperly sealed cans and bottles. With chicken, we usually see salmonella/shigella, listeria is possible but rare. It can take at least a day to develop symptoms if you contracted it. Typically your body will get over it just fine without treatment. The bigger risk with Listeriosis is if you are pregnant. Hope this helps ...Read more

I'm 36 weeks preg. I are coleslaw last weekend not knowing I shouldn't. For the last two days I have aches, stuffiness, headache. Could it be listeria?

Coleslaw?: I don't see why you can't have coleslaw as long as it is properly prepared. You can get a food borne illness anytime from anything. As far as listeria, while it is theoretically possible, cole slaw is not a typical food where it is found. Muscle aches, fever, vomiting and diarrhea are the more common symptoms. ...Read more

How long after getting listeria will it show up in blood tests? What if I had it a month or more ago? I am pregnant.

How long after getting listeria will it show up in blood tests? What if I had it a month or more ago? I am pregnant.

Blood cultures: Listeria testing is best done when one is acutely ill typically through blood cultures. Pregnant women with high fever, diarrhea, myalgias and headache in whom no other more common cause can be identified may be tested. For a potential infection more than a month ago typically no testing is done and fetal surveillance through basic prenatal care and ultrasound are done. ...Read more

I am 13 weeks pregnant and ate queso fresco accidentally last night. What can I do to ensure my baby doesn't contract listeria?

Yum yum...: Queso fresco is quite delicious (mexican cheese made from raw milk) and only causes problem if it is contaminated. American cheese is made from pasterized milk, thus less chance of bacterial contamination. Listeria is a serious infection, but rather rare...7/million in us...For now, just monitor closely...If fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea etc..Consult doc...Otherwise, should be ok... Good luck. ...Read more

I ate a product since recalled b/c of possible Listeria Monocytogenes contamination. How long till I know I'm in the clear in terms of getting sick?

Listeria infection: Healthy people rarely become ill from listeria infection, but the disease can be fatal to unborn babies and newborns. People who have weakened immune systems also are at higher risk of life-threatening complications. Prompt antibiotic treatment can help curb the effects of listeria infection. Symptoms may occur very quickly, within a day or two but may also be delayed for months in onset. ...Read more

Eating a salad in rest. today and found a few misplaced alphalpha spouts in there. Terrified. Is listeria from this common??

Why the terror?: there is nothing especially dangerous about alfalfa sprouts. There have been recalls due to listeria before, it's true. But food borne illness is a possibility in virtually everything you eat. Bean sprouts, spinach, broccoli, strawberries, ground beef, chicken, etc. have all had contamination.Don't let it paralyze you.
