Acyclovir 800mg, took one pill last night and woke w/ swollen face. Taking for shingles, rash is on face as well. Please help me I have no ins..

Angioedema: An allergic like reaction to Acyclovir is a possible explanation for your facial swelling. It can be accompanied by a rash, swollen face, lips, tongue, as well as throat swelling which could be life threatening. Would need to stop the medication. Facial shingles should be managed by a doctor. Can't rule out ocular herpes in your case. Er is a good option or at least urgent care. ...Read more

Have Shingles Feb. Been getting sores in my head, face, mouth, pubic area, am on Valtrex (valacyclovir) rashes are itchy causing pain how do I get rid of shingles?

Change antiviral?: You cannot get rid of the virus that causes chicken pox and also shingles - varicella zoster. Would be odd, but not impossible, to have shingles on face and pubic area. May be another virus. Liquid from oozing lesions can be tested to see what virus it is. ...Read more

Have shingles and have been getting rashes on my leg, pubic area, face, mouth why would my doc want a HIV test, I am offended by this I have shingles?

Have shingles and have been getting rashes on my leg, pubic area, face, mouth why would my doc want a HIV test, I am offended by this I have shingles?

You should be tested: Try not to be offended, your doc has your best interest in mind and is being complete in the work up. 'Shingles' usually appears in a dermatome (meaning that it only follows one single nerve distribution). If we see that it is in MORE than one distribution then we start to worry about other underlying problems because it is not the way that shingles usually presents. I would recommend the test. ...Read more

Heat rash or shingles on face. Not painful like shingles but used to have it many of times as a child. Want to make sure it's not shingles

Heat rash or shingles on face. Not painful like shingles but used to have it many of times as a child. Want to make sure it's not shingles

Specific location: Shingles are going to be localized to the distribution of a specific nerve root & only on one side of the face. (never crosses the midline) It is often most painful before the spots emerge & rarely happens more than once. I've seen it as early as 15 months but it is unusual before late adulthood. If this happens repeatedly it is likely something else. An exam can confirm or exclude shingles. ...Read more

Can you get shingles in the cranial ganglia and then have neuralgias in all of the nerves? Would you show a rash in your face is it was the case?

Can you get shingles in the cranial ganglia and then have neuralgias in all of the nerves? Would you show a rash in your face is it was the case?

Nope: Herpes zoster (shingles) can originate from any nerve, including a cranial nerve, causing an outbreak of the scalp, face, etc. Sometimes shingles is followed by ongoing pain due to post-herpetic neuropathy (PHN) from the involved nerve. It does not cause neuralgia in any other nerves. Without a localized skin rash, shingles almost certainly isn't the cause of any symtoms you have. ...Read more

Pustular rash face/chest when on antibiotics (sinuses) doc said rare skin reaction. Could it have been shingles? Rash going away once med stopped

AGEP?: Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis? Few other true drug-related adverse reactions result in general pustular rash. This can be a non-specific reaction (can occur with several unrelated drugs) and may be related to complicating underlying inflammatory condition. See Immunologist to review/assess the reaction and to better define future risk. Not advisable to simply avoid the med in future ...Read more

Saw PCP for shingles, right side of face. No rash. Prescription Valtrex (valacyclovir). Asked to watch for rash on tip of nose. "Bump" today, but on left side of tip. ER?

Saw PCP for shingles, right side of face. No rash. Prescription Valtrex (valacyclovir). Asked to watch for rash on tip of nose. "Bump" today, but on left side of tip. ER?

Antiviral treatment: There is 'one level higher' in terms of antiviral treatment for shingles -& that's intravenous acyclovir. It's heavy duty stuff and you would need to go to the ER to get that going. The real question is though, is that 'bump' at all related to shingles Y/N. Given that this can be serious - affecting the face and possibly the eye, I think you should get it seen today. If there's an ID doc, ask 'em ...Read more
