My wrist has been slightly swollen and extremely painful since the day after my rotator cuff repair surgery, 2 months ago. How long can this last?

Need a diagnosis: The question is why is your wrist is hurting and swollen. Most likely, this is indirectly, not directly related to your RC repair. Tendonitis because of a change in upper extremity biomechanics would be a thought. Your surgeon should be able to help you discover the cause and discuss treatment options. How long does it take to recover from rotator cuff surgery?

A realistic goal-: -6mos 2 get motion and strength back requires dedicated PT daily work @ home. Ur shoulder will never B as before but with a lot of early work on passive ROM, @ 5-6 wks gentle act/assist exercise, supervised, then gradually active 4 strength, again supervised. By 8-12 wks U have 2 continue to push 4 ROM & strength. By 6 mo any improvement comes very slowly. ...Read more

Rotator cuff have bilateral full thickness tear 10mm anterior to posterior and 11 mm medial to lateral is this surgery painful does this mean 2 tears?

They're fixable: We generally think in terms of centimeters - if both shoulders have similar size tears, then they are in the 'small' category, 1-2 cm in size. As long as the tissue quality is good and the mris are recent, they should be repairable, likely arthroscopically. However, the full recovery time is in the 3-6 month range regardless. As for pain, that depends more on the patient than the surgery. ...Read more

Torn rotator cuff surgery & diabetes, how much longer to recover?

Torn rotator cuff surgery & diabetes, how much longer to recover?

Let me explain: Diabetes is a multisystem disorder that affects the wound healing process. Maintaining normal blood sugar levels is important as hyperglycaemia has been correlated with impaired wound healing (senior, 2000). In order to optimise wound-healing potential, patients should be encouraged to achieve target levels for glycated haemoglobin and sugar level. ...Read more

Can u re-injure a rotator cuff just by stretching? Its been 5 months after surgery and my arm feels week and still painful

Cuff: Simple answer, yes. Unfortunately, rotator cuff healing depends on many factors influencing success including the size of the tear, health & age of the patient, & appropriate rest followed by therapy. It can take a year to fully recover. If you're concerned about re-tear, talk to your surgeon about a followup MRI arthrogram. ...Read more

How long is the recovery period after rotator cuff surgery?

Rotator cuff repair: Surgery to re-attach a torn rotator cuff tendon typically takes 6 weeks for preliminary healing of tendon to bone. At 6 weeks, the sling is discontinued. Physical therapy is helpful initially to regain range of motion of the shoulder. Once rom has been restored, aditional pt to regain strength and function. By 6 months, most patients are pretty functional. Full recovery 9-12 months. Good luck! ...Read more

What symptoms would a torn rotator cuff vs sprain RC? And can RC injury heal without surgery? If so how long would a sprain RC take to heal?? Thanks!!

What symptoms would a torn rotator cuff vs sprain RC? And can RC injury heal without surgery? If so how long would a sprain RC take to heal?? Thanks!!

Pain with Abduction: a full thickness rotator cuff tear can cause considerable weakness and pain especially with movement in the and of motion controlled most by the rotator cuff tendon that is injured. The top tendon. Supraspinatus, would cause symptoms when trying to lift arm from side of body. A mere sprain would be less painful with minimal weakness. A mild sprain could take upwards of 6 weeks to improve. ...Read more

My biceps is painful nightly&end of day. I don't lift any heavy stuff but had rotator cuff/biceps surgery 2 years ago. NSAID don't help. Suggestions?

Get injection or MRI: The biceps tendon can hurt in the shoulder or down in the elbow. I assume it hurts in the shoulder since you had shoulder surgery. You may have developed biceps tendonitis or partial tearing. A rotator cuff re-injury can also cause biceps pain. You should see a medical provider for evaluation. The next step would be physical therapy, a steroid injection or a new MRI to look for an injury. ...Read more

I : I agree with dr. Peterson. Depending on type of rotator cuff tear, physical therapy is often an excellent option. By maximizing the muscle strength of the surrounding the other rotator cuff muscles and surrounding shoulder blade muscles, the pain associated with the tear and subsequent dysfunction may be controlled. For those who do not have success with physical therapy, surgery may improve their results. Physical therapy seems to do a little better in the degenerative type tears or the partial thickness rotator cuff tears. Usually, large full thickness rotator cuff tears tend to require surgical repair. ...Read more

How long do I need to go to physical therapy after rotator cuff surgery?

How long do I need to go to physical therapy after rotator cuff surgery?

As long as it takes: While the exact duration of pt following your rotator cuff surgery will be managed by your surgeon, depending on the severity of your tear pt may last anywhere from 7 weeks to 1 year or more. All programs will emphasize avoiding strenuous activities that could cause a repeat injury while remaining active enough to prevent joint stiffness, one of the most common rotator cuff repair complications. ...Read more

How long will it take to recover from the pinched nerve surgery on my arm, or could it be a torn rotator cuff?

How long will it take to recover from the pinched nerve surgery on my arm, or could it be a torn rotator cuff?

Hard to say: Recovery from a compressive neuropathy can take several months to a year to completely recover depending how much damage to the nerve was caused and the recovery my be incomplete in some cases. You could potentially have a rotator cuff tear also, you might need an MRI or ultrasound. Surgery to decompress a nerve should have some immediate relief, but certainly not complete relief. ...Read more
