What is the difference between pruritus and urticaria?

Similar: Pruritus means itching (and not necessarily a rash) while urticaria refers to an itchy rash that is raised, red, round to oval lesions that come and go. The problems that cause itching (pruritus) without a rash can be different than the causes of hives (urticaria). ...Read more

Skin issues: It seems like you are using the appropriate initial medicine, and have blood tests. The next step is another evaluation. Examination definitely, may need to add a topical steroid ointment (medicine applied onto your skin), and if still no relief maybe a skin biopsy. Good luck with finding the answer... ...Read more

Urticaria like spots on chest. Have been there for years. Not itchy or painful, same size and shape always. What could it be?

Not urticaria: Urticaria are very itchy spots fading away in a day often to be replaced with more hives that also last for a day. All allergic rashes itch. Rashes caused by other immune disorders blister or bruise. You likely have a benign disorder if it has been present for many years, has not changed & you are otherwise well. If you can afford a copay a hcp with dermatology expertise may help. ...Read more

Dermatographic urticaria for over a year, 3 hard immobile lumps under skin, very itchy skin. What could this be? I am 23 and cancer is in my family.

Dermatographic urticaria for over a year, 3 hard immobile lumps under skin, very itchy skin. What could this be? I am 23 and cancer is in my family.

A few things: The most common causes of "lumps under the skin" (mobile or nonmobile) are lipomas (growth of fatty tissue) or cysts, which are both benign but can cause problems if they continue to grow. I don't think the itchy skin is related. There are various other growths/tumors that can present like this. I recommend having it evaluated by a dermatologist to determine if these should be excised. ...Read more

I got an adverse reaction to advil. Rash all over. Looks like urticaria. I took one 10 mg claritin (loratadine). Can I take another soon after? Painful itchy hives

Yes: If the hives are itchy, you may up the dose of Claritin (loratadine) to 4 x daily but this may cause some drowsiness. Allegra is another option. If the problem gets worse, you will need to see your doctor. Consult an allergist to find out whether you are "sensitive" to all NSAIDs or only to Advil. ...Read more

How long do itchy hives last?

Unpredictable: Unfortunately this is one of the most difficult if not impossible questions to answer. For hives as a result of a food allergy they should only last a day or 2 as long as the food is not continued. The problem comes in when the underlying source is not clear. Arbitrarily after 6 weeks hives are labeled chronic. The short answer is hives can last minutes to a lifetime. ...Read more

I have reddish blotches on my abdomen and under breasts. No longer itchy, and no other symptoms whatsoever. Hives? How long do they last?

Hives / Urticaria: It's impossible to diagnose a rash from a short description. Hives generally itch quite a bit, and they are raised like mosquito bites, so you can feel definite bumps when you rub the skin. Under the breasts, it may be more likely to be a heat rash or mild Candida. Those rashes aren't always itchy. If it was previously itchy and IS hives, it resolves in a few hours and the skin looks perfect. ...Read more
