How long does it take to heal and recover completely after the metal plate is removed from 5th metacarpal bone? After I recover I want to do is: 1. Karate 2. Knuckle Push Ups 3. Hand Grip Exercises

It varies.: You can start "hand grip exercises" as soon as ordinary activities are comfortable. Ideally these should be part of a general physical therapy recovery program Knuckle push ups and karate can subject your hand to extreme (and, in the case of karate, unpredictable) forces. You must get clearance from your ortho doc or physical therapist before resuming these activities

I would like to ask Dr. Peter Ihle that after metal plate is removed from 5th metacarpal bone, How long do I need to wait before I can start writing?

You can start: Writing as soon as you feel comfortable. After removal of a plate it is really just a matter of wound healing. Outside of that you may have to hold off on moderate heavy activity until the screw holes fill in. About 8 weeks.

I broke my 4th metacarpal bone in my right hand. How long till I can start lifting weights again?

I broke my 4th metacarpal bone in my right hand. How long till I can start lifting weights again?

Until it heals: The answer is not meant to be funny, but it is true. Typically the bone heals in 4 - 6 weeks, but it also depends on the type of fracture and how stable it is. I would check with your physician before starting any lifting program. Going back too soon can cause the bone to break again.

I have a "severe bone bruise" of the metacarpals and was placed in a cast they dr said they would call back for follow-up how long will wear this cast?

I have a "severe bone bruise" of the metacarpals and was placed in a cast they dr said they would call back for follow-up how long will wear this cast?

If the bone: Is not broken, generally the will leave the splint or cast on for 1-2 weeks. If there is a fracture, usually the cast stays on for 4-6 weeks. At your next doctor visit, they will probably take another Xray to make sure there was not a small fracture that didn't show up on the first Xray. Hope this helps!

After placing the metal plate on 5th metacarpal bone, How many months will it take to recover Boxer's Fracture (5th metacarpal) completely in order to go for metal plate removal (second surgery).?

6-8 weeks: Most likely it take 6-8 weeks for the bone to heal. They might want to wait for at least three month before to decide to have it removed. Check with the surgeon that put it there. They will let you know what they preferred.

Had boxers fracture in splint for 14 days. Can I take off splint and buddy splint and wrap my metacarpal bones 2-5 in self adherent wrap?

Had boxers fracture in splint for 14 days. Can I take off splint and buddy splint and wrap my metacarpal bones 2-5 in self adherent wrap?

Depends on healing: I do allow buddy taping of the 5th and 4th fingers for a 5th metacarpal fracture once the fracture has stabilized. Fracture stability is indicated by lack of new displacement and angulation plus the presence of new bone on the x-rays, indicating healing.

I broke my pinky metacarpal bone. What is the easiest and cheapest thing I can do to fix this?

I broke my pinky metacarpal bone. What is the easiest and cheapest thing I can do to fix this?

See your doctor: Tell your doctor your situation and then follow his instructios to the letter. Many patients will remove their splint/cast for reasons that don't always make any sense but this can compromise the result of treatment. Not to treat make cost you more to fix latter.

Hi, I think I may have fractured my 5th metacarpal bone in my hand. Need help! Not sure if it is or not?

Get x ray: Its important you find out since metacarpal bones need to heal correctly. I advise you see your Primary Care Provider or go to an URGENT care clinic for an xray and possible casting/splinting!!

If its tender and a bit swollen on my metacarpal bones in my hand could they be broken?

If its tender and a bit swollen on my metacarpal bones in my hand could they be broken?

If trauma: If there was an injury to the area, then a plain X-ray would resolve the issue. If no injury then an X-ray can still be of value to exclude other causes such as arthritis. Then you can go from there

No: Probably not if your growth plates are fused. And once you stop, nothing will help you resume growth.

Is it true that if you want to remove the metal plate from your 5th metacarpal bone, you have to wait for at least 6 months since original surgery?

Hands heal more-: -rapidly than other long bones of the body. I usually would wait until imaging shows complete healing. Then when the hardware is removed U have 2 B protected 4 about 3 wks 2 allow the bones 2 remodel so they can accept the stresses. While the hardware is in it stress shields the bone so when the hrdwr is gone it needs time 2 re-align its internal structure 2 B strong again.
