How long does it take to heal and recover completely after the metal plate is removed from 5th metacarpal bone? After I recover I want to do is: 1. Karate 2. Knuckle Push Ups 3. Hand Grip Exercises

How long does it take to heal and recover completely after the metal plate is removed from 5th metacarpal bone? After I recover I want to do is: 1. Karate 2. Knuckle Push Ups 3. Hand Grip Exercises

It varies.: You can start "hand grip exercises" as soon as ordinary activities are comfortable. Ideally these should be part of a general physical therapy recovery program Knuckle push ups and karate can subject your hand to extreme (and, in the case of karate, unpredictable) forces. You must get clearance from your ortho doc or physical therapist before resuming these activities ...Read more

I broke my 4th metacarpal bone in my right hand. How long till I can start lifting weights again?

Until it heals: The answer is not meant to be funny, but it is true. Typically the bone heals in 4 - 6 weeks, but it also depends on the type of fracture and how stable it is. I would check with your physician before starting any lifting program. Going back too soon can cause the bone to break again. ...Read more

Had boxers fracture in splint for 14 days. Can I take off splint and buddy splint and wrap my metacarpal bones 2-5 in self adherent wrap?

Depends on healing: I do allow buddy taping of the 5th and 4th fingers for a 5th metacarpal fracture once the fracture has stabilized. Fracture stability is indicated by lack of new displacement and angulation plus the presence of new bone on the x-rays, indicating healing. ...Read more

Is it true that if you want to remove the metal plate from your 5th metacarpal bone, you have to wait for at least 6 months since original surgery?

Hands heal more-: -rapidly than other long bones of the body. I usually would wait until imaging shows complete healing. Then when the hardware is removed U have 2 B protected 4 about 3 wks 2 allow the bones 2 remodel so they can accept the stresses. While the hardware is in it stress shields the bone so when the hrdwr is gone it needs time 2 re-align its internal structure 2 B strong again. ...Read more

I hear that once metal plate is placed on 5th metacarpal bone, no need to remove it after complete recovery. But, I think that it will be extremely painful at old age. Don't you think?

Metal plates: Implanted metal plates in the hand are safe & usually allow for good healing. As the healing process occurs, your body will usually grow into or encapsulate the metal. You will become accustomed to the metal well before old age, unless subsequent injuries to the same area occur or wound infection. If healed well, one can do more harm than good when trying to remove the plate, hence keep it in. ...Read more
