Dr. Susan Wingo answered:

how long does it take to know results of your thyroid biopsy?

Can vary

Thyroid_ultrasound
It depends upon where it is sent & how much testing is done. In-town pathologists will usually give an report in 1-3 working days; out-of-town pathologists in 2-5 working days. If genetic analysis is being done as well, this can take 1-2 weeks.

Is it good to get a second opinion on your results of your thyroid biopsy?

It depends

Thyroid_ultrasound
Thyroid cytology requires expertise in some cases. If you are not sure of the expertise of the person reading the cytology you should ask for a second opinion. If you just dont like the conclusion, but they are expert, then you need to have an expert surgeon or endocrinologist who will take the time to explain why the treatment is appropriate and safe.

Can you take advil before thyroid biopsy?

Yes, but better not

Thyroid_gland
Hi, I will perform an FNA even if the patient has taken Advil recently, but I prefer that patients take Tylenol rather than ibuprofen both before and after the biopsy if necessary.

Dr. Howard Shapiro answered:

3days ago I had thyroid biopsy.Stil hurts when i swallow, move neck and touch it.Like being poked with a needle.Normal? How long will it last?

A week or more

Biopsy
I presume that this was a needle bioopsy of the thyroid. I should heal in less than a week. Occasionally, a small amount of bleeding occurs where the biopsy needly was inserted. This can prolong the discomfort for an additional week. If the discomfort is decreasing, even if slowly, it's OK. If it is increasing, chek with the doctor who did the biopsy.

How painful is thyroid biopsy?

Depends

Thyroid_gland
Usually throud biopsies are not painful. The doctor will numb the skin over the site of biopsy and use very skinny needles to perform the biopsy. Occasionally, when there is an inflammatory condition in the thyroid the biopsies can be uncomfortable.

What doctor does a thyroid biopsy?

Endo or radiologist

Thyroid
Thyroid fine needle aspirations are often done by endocrinologists who can do diagnostic ultrasounds and biopsies in the office; if this capability is not available, the patient can be referred for the biopsy to be done by a radiologist.
