How long does it take to get mammogram results? I have been waiting.

One week

There are many reasons for a delay. Most reports are available within a week. More than a month is unacceptable. Call your doctor.

Dr. Barry Rosen answered:

Please tell me how long it takes for to get mammogram results back?

24 hours

Screening
This may vary quite a bit depending upon where you get your mammogram. There are many centers that offer immediate "reads" of mammograms if you are willing to come in during normal business hours. I think a better question is how long are you willing to wait to get a result? If you want immediate or fast (<24 hr) results, it is best to shop around. Be sure to choose an FDA-accredited facility.

Dr. David N. Dang answered:

Can it take long to get mammogram results?

Varies, usu 1-3 days

Mammogram
This varies from practice to practice. A screening mammogram usually take 1-3 days to get results. If there are old studies that need to be retrieved or ordered from elsewhere, it may take longer, sometimes even 2-3 weeks. There may be guidelines to limit the maximum to under 4 weeks. Diagnostic mammograms are usually interpreted in the same day, unless old films are needed.

How long is the result of a mammogram?

Not very

Mammogram
It is increasingly the norm that a patient will be given an initial impression of the mammogram study before they leave the imaging facility. A final report to the patient will routinely follow by mail in a few days along with a report to the referring Physician.

Most breast centers interpret mammograms within 24 hours after they are completed & will send a report to the Dr's office ASAP; if you shop around, you will find some that guarantee a result before you leave. Every office has a different policy for communicating results--clarify before the test what your doctor's policy is. I encourage my patients to call my office rather than wait for a call.

Dr. Joseph Accurso answered:

I wanted to know when you get a mammogram, do you get the results right away?

Depends - ask clinic

Mammogram
Each breast imaging center, clinic or hospital is different. Some try to provide immediate results, or offer results if the patient is willing to wait for 30 or 60 minutes while the radiologist (specially trained physician - usually 6 years after medical school) interprets the mammogram. Other locations provide results within a day or two, but some places are slow and results take a week or more
