How Long Does It Take To Get Hiv Test Results
I did 4th Generation HIV test after around 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15 weeks of an exposure. Is this 100% conclusive? Can I get back safely to my wife
Sero-conversion: The whole concept of delayed sero-conversion dates back to old & sloppy tests. PCR testing now will show virus in the blood with or without antibodies. If you need to cling to the old adages...at 6 months. 99.99% of the population will have developed antibodies after an exposure. Thus the 6 month window. I believe a colleague of mine Lyssette Cardona, MD is in Dubai. She's one of the best!! ...Read more
Hiv infection is caused by a retrovirus....This retrovirus binds to CD4 cells (for the most part). You may detect the virus by several different methods. An elisa test (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay). You may also detect it by doing a test referred to as a western blot (a gel protein electrophoresis). Thirdly by pcr (polymerase chain reaction) which ...Read more
How long should I wait to get an accurate HIV test after (maybe) got exposed to it? And how long does the test itself take to give back the results?
Rapid testing HIV: You can get oraquick otc, a home oral test that is quite accurate, and then follow up with a more detailed antibody test at 4-6 weeks and again in three months. There are rare individuals who do not become positive until 6 mos. If you want to spend the money there is an RNA pcr which will be definitive if negative at 4 wks. Make sure, however, that you also get tested for other stds. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Depends on type: An HIV test can be done instantly in the doctor's office (results are not as reliable), or it can be done in a regular lab. Usually not more than 2-3 days. However, many labs "batch" test -- meaning they only test for certain analytes once per week or every 3 days. So, maybe that is the delay... ...Read more

See your doctor: If you are concerned about possible exposure to HIV, you need to see a doctor immediately. 50 days is too late for post-exposure prophylaxis however your doctor could still advise you and tell you which is the next step. How long after possible HIV exposure can I get a definitive test result from a home oraquick HIV test?
NEVER definitive: There are several percent false negatives on home oraquick. Alex, you can't go on worrying like this -- it'll slow you down emotionally and interfere with your work and just being happy. Get with your primary care physician and pay for a nucleic acid test now. It's better to know, no matter what the result. Be brave, cherish the memory of love, and move on with your life. ...Read more

How can a person take a home HIV test or visit a physician and get results without the results being sprung on you out of nowhere?
That's easy: One can go to her doctor and ask for an HIV test. She schedules a return visit to the doctor for 2 weeks later. The lab does the test. The patient does not open any email from the lab or the doctor, and also does not open any postal mail from the doctor or the lab. She waits until her return visit to get her result from the doctor. It's really that easy. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I've grown impatient waiting for my STD/HIV test results to come in from my doctor's. Is it unhealthy to go get another test done that guarantees quick, same-appointment, results? I tested last Wed.
Be careful!: "Unhelthy"? Maybe for your wallet; it could be expensive. Also, there are no accurate rapid tests for some STDs, and others may be less reliable than lab-based tests. You would be wise to just relax and wait for the results of the tests already in the works. ...Read more

Third: the antibody testing that is routine for HIV can miss infection for up to six months after exposure. ...Read more
