Dialysis (Definition)

Hemodialysis remove wastes and excess water from the blood by circulating blood outside the body through an external filter, called a dialyzer. Blood and dialysate flow through in opposite directions and the ...Read more

How long will if take for someone to die after stopping dialysis.?

How long will if take for someone to die after stopping dialysis.?

Stopping HD: It truly depends on several factors. The most important is the patient's residual renal function. The more the kidneys work, the longer it takes for the toxins to build up. Outside of that, there are no set time frames. I have seen patients pass within 2-5 days but I have also seen patients live for longer than 3 weeks. ...Read more

If dialysis is given once then one has to take it always?Or by living on only veggies one can stop it?

Depends on disease: If a person was normal and then got a new illness (an acute illness) causing acute kidney failure, he might need dialysis while waiting for his kidneys to heal. If his kidneys heal well enough, he can stop dialysis. However, if a person has chronic kidney disease and has been losing kidney function over the years, his kidneys don't heal up after he starts dialysis. He continues to need dialysis. ...Read more

Why do dialysis treatments take so long?

Dialysis time: Your kidneys work 24/7/365 to remove toxins and maintain fluid and mineral balance for your body. We do dialysis over the shortest time possible to get the job done to replace those functions without putting an intolerable strain on the heart, the dialsysis access, or other body systems. If we go too quickly you could have severe low blood pressure or severe symptomatic metabolic disturbances. ...Read more

Can you tell me if a person is recieving dialysis and decieded to stop treatment. How long would they live?

Dialysis: Usually not very long. Water accumulates and that makes breathing more difficult. Urea accumulates and that makes the person sleepy and eventually unarousable. Blood salts get all messed up and that can cause the heart to stop suddenly. This is just for starters. The longest I have seen a patient live after stopping dialysis is 1 week, but I am sure there are reports of people going longer. ...Read more

Please tell me how long it takes for to fall from stage 3 kidney disease to dialysis?

Please tell me how long it takes for to fall from stage 3 kidney disease to dialysis?

No single answer: It can range from "never", to "few months" in the worst case scenario. There are red flags that are predictive of a worst outcome like uncontrolled blood pressure or massive amounts of protein in the urine. There are some equations that can help nephrologists make a reasonable prediction, but they are not quite as good as crystal balls! ...Read more
