How Long Does It Take For Food To Digest
Variable: This can vary based on the type of food, gender, age, and based on the individual. It has been reported that food passes through the stomach and small intestine in 6-8 hours, when it enters the large intestine for further absorption. Then it may take on average 33 hours for men and 47 hours for women to pass, but again, this is variable. Children may take around 33 hours from end to end.
Variable: It depends on the individual, what you've eaten (and even your gender), but around six to eight hours for food to pass through your stomach and small intestine. It can then take another 20-50 hours to move through the large intestine.
How long does it take to digest food? My daughter threw up a pickle she ate 3 nights ago along with a ton of other stuff!
Not normal: Food you eat will stay in stomach for about 3-4 hours or so then will go down to your small bowel etc. Some conditions like in diabetes, gastric emptying time can be longer if diabetes is affecting the nerve innervating the stomach. You can not throw something up from 3 nights ago, however. If you do, that means probably you have blockage that prevents the food came down completely.See 1 more doctor answer
It depends: Fats and carbs take longer while proteins digest quicker
3-6 hours: 3-6 hours for solids about 3 hours for most liquids. Meat is slower to digest and may take up to six hours milk curdles and the casein may take up to three to four hours to fully digest, while the whey part of milk stays liquid and may be digested in less than three hours.
Milk versus Meat: Milk digests in about 3 hours protein in meat digests more slowly and can take up to six hours to digest. Higher fatty foods digest more slowly as well. Carbohydrates digest faster than protein- especially if the carbohydrates are processed like white flour. Fiber slows the digestive process and is better for the slower absorption of sugar unto the bloodstream.
How long?: Different foods do take different amounts of time for digestion, fats taking the longest. If you have not had unintended weight loss, I would not be concerned.
Not necessarily: In general fatty foods take longer to digest with or without acid reflux. However, you do need to get treatment for acid reflux as it can have many unpleasant consequences.
Hello. What investigative procedure is used to look at the stomach or intestines? My food takes long to digest. Thanks
GI studies: Test should be guided by your history and physical exam. Please tell your Dr. And let team decide what to do. Depending on what is going on will dictate which tests should be done if any.
Sometimes my food take long to digest, once I was trying to vomit and just a little of food come out like the rest was unable to some up?
Sounds like you: Need to invest in the time to figure out exactly what's going on with your intestinal tract. There are times were persons have motility issues that lead to delayed gastric emptying (though not particularly common in a 20 year old). But there may be something else going in this case too and you'd be best suited with a good formal evaluation. Best of luck.See 1 more doctor answer
My stomach hurts even after eating a small portion of food. It's dull pain in the upper ab. It also seems to take a long time for me to digest food.?
Possibly Gallbladder: If the meals contain fat, it could be related to gallbladder problems. You could also have some kind of a stricture in the esophagus. In either case, you should have an evaluation by your primary care doc. S/he may even send you to a gastroenterologist.See 1 more doctor answer
See GI doctor?: You may have a bowel motility issue and fatty foods tend to reduce it further. Try exercising regularly and eating less fatty foods and see if these measures help. If not, see a GI doctor to find out what the problem may be.
G.I. doctor to check: A gastroenterologist (G.I. Or stomach specialist) can evaluate for problems if a person thinks he is not absorbing nutrients properly. There are many different types of malabsorption, so one cannot just presume that taking some acid would help. Some digestive enzymes require an acid environment, but other enzymes (the ones in the small intestine) need the acid "neutralized" in order to work.See 1 more doctor answer
What to do if I have these medium-sized pills I'm supposed to take every meal to help digest food. Are they even useful or safe?
Don't know.: You didn't mention the name of the pills.
Do our tastes in/ability to digest food change as we age? If so, why? I find that certain foods I used to love no longer appeal to or disagree w/me.
Tastes do change: But not as much as their associations. Having pleasant or unpleasant experiences associated with foods/tastes will have a large impact. And some things like hot/spice changes the nerves that are triggered by them and they have less effect over time. And children tend to have different tastes than adults.
It literaly takes me 4 hrs to digest my food no matter how little I eat or what I eat and feel full n gassy. Y is this n what can I do about? Pls help!
Need diag tests: Diabetics can develop gastroparesis which can explain your symptoms. You will need a gstric emptying study to evaluate stomach motility. If that's normal you will need a complete GI eval. Contact your physician and try some over the counter probiotics which may help with bloating and discomfort.
