The Tamiflu (oseltamivir) will shorten the course of the flu, but it must be taken soon after the onset of symptoms.

Keep pushing fluids as much as possible.

Help please? How long does it take for an average child/teenager to heal from sickness(flu, cold)?
7-10 days: Most viruses last 7-10 days, no matter what you do. The treatment is mainly just to make the child feel better. Fever control, saline in the nose, a cool mist humidifier, and lots of fluids to drink will help the most. Frequently a virus will get worse for 3-4 days, peak for a day or so, then improve for 3-4 days. If he isn't getting better or symptoms are worse, see his doctor ...Read more

A week or so: In my area, it takes at least a week to confirm h1n1 or similar variant influenza strains. This kind of testing is rarely indicated because of that time frame, and if you have a positive flu test at this time of year, it is likely one of the novel forms of flu, though those are very rare. ...Read more

Longer than flu: "bird flu" , or avian influenza, in general is moe serious than seasonal influenza. It is not uncommon to be sick for longer than a week, and for some symtoms such as cough to last for weeks as this influenza causes moe irritation of the airways and that takes longer to heal. Take it much slower and get plenty of rest. Thank goodness bird flu is extrememly rare in this country. ...Read more
10 days or never: Avian flu (h5n1) will run its course in birds in about ten days - if the bird survives (and most do) they will not be shedding virus after approx 10 and are then no longer a risk. Unfortunately the flu virus is fairly stable and a person can get infected after simply touching a contaminated surface. Fortunately, we haven't had big outbreaks of avian flu in the west (yet!). ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Been coughing (more casual than serious) w/ phlegm for 2 wks, no other sign of flu. Didn't take any medicine, thought it'd go away, what to do now?
See a doctor: If you continue coughing without any other symptoms might wait until after 4 wks have passed since conditions like mycoplasma can produce prolonged coughing.
