How Long Does It Take For Claritin To Work
How many weeks does it take for claritin (loratadine) 10mg to work? How long should I give it a try before deciding to switch to a different antihistamine?
A few hours: Claritin (loratadine) should start working within a couple of hours. If it doesn't not help at all, then switching to another won't do you much good. If it does help somewhat, then you may try the other alternatives which may possess more antihistamine effect than Claritin (loratadine). Read more
Up to 1 hour: Claritin (loratadine) can work relatively quickly in most people. That is, it usually works within 30 minutes. However, in some people it may take up to 60 minutes to have its full effect. If it is not working within that time, or if the duration of effect becomes less and less, seeing an allergy specialist for allergy testing would be recommended as other treatments may be more effective. 3 days to reach peak: Claritin (loratadine) (loratidine) takes 3 days to reach a steady state, so it could take that long for it to work on hives. Other non-drowsy antihistamines are a better choice: Allegra (fexofenadine) reaches peak effect within 2 hours and Zyrtec (cetirizine) reaches peak effect in 1-2 hours. If you see no benefit at all within 5 hours of taking these, they probably will not work for you. Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Who knows: Work for what? Claritin supposedly starts working within 90 minutes. But Claritin is also the weakest binding antihistamine sold over the counter. Personally, I feel Claritin is a waste of money. Use a stronger antihistamine like fexofenadine or Cetirizine which cause minimal to no sedation. Use Benadryl (diphenhydramine) only at nighttime because it can make you drowsy. Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

I'm sensitive when it comes to medication, I want to take Claritin (loratadine) but will it still work if I get the childrens kind?
My husband swears Loratadine doesn't work for him unless he takes 20mg BID. What is the highest SAFE dose take?
Recommended dose: The recommended daily dose is 10 mg. It is fairly a safe medicine, but side effects may arise in high doses. It seems like he is tolerating the 40 mg/day dose. The high dose definition may vary from patient to patient according their body tolerance. As he requires a large dose, he might benefit from adding different class medicine, so that he can avoid the side effects from unconventional doses. Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
