How Long Does It Take For Claritin To Work
How many weeks does it take for claritin (loratadine) 10mg to work? How long should I give it a try before deciding to switch to a different antihistamine?
Try for a few days: Antihistamines begin to work in less than an hour but a person may not feel significant relief for a few days. Claritin tends to be one of the weaker non-drowsy antihistamines. Others available without a prescription are Zyrtec, Allegra and Xyzal. If antihistamines are still not working then an evaluation by an allergist can be helpful to determine the cause of symptoms ...Read more
Up to 1 hour: Claritin (loratadine) can work relatively quickly in most people. That is, it usually works within 30 minutes. However, in some people it may take up to 60 minutes to have its full effect. If it is not working within that time, or if the duration of effect becomes less and less, seeing an allergy specialist for allergy testing would be recommended as other treatments may be more effective. ...Read more
Pretty Quickly: Most antihistamines will start to work within the first 30-40 minutes. ...Read more
3 days to reach peak: Claritin (loratadine) (loratidine) takes 3 days to reach a steady state, so it could take that long for it to work on hives. Other non-drowsy antihistamines are a better choice: Allegra (fexofenadine) reaches peak effect within 2 hours and Zyrtec (cetirizine) reaches peak effect in 1-2 hours. If you see no benefit at all within 5 hours of taking these, they probably will not work for you. ...Read more
Who knows: Work for what? Claritin supposedly starts working within 90 minutes. But Claritin is also the weakest binding antihistamine sold over the counter. Personally, I feel Claritin is a waste of money. Use a stronger antihistamine like fexofenadine or Cetirizine which cause minimal to no sedation. Use Benadryl (diphenhydramine) only at nighttime because it can make you drowsy. ...Read more
I'm sensitive when it comes to medication, I want to take Claritin (loratadine) but will it still work if I get the childrens kind?

My husband swears Loratadine doesn't work for him unless he takes 20mg BID. What is the highest SAFE dose take?
Recommended dose: The recommended daily dose is 10 mg. It is fairly a safe medicine, but side effects may arise in high doses. It seems like he is tolerating the 40 mg/day dose. The high dose definition may vary from patient to patient according their body tolerance. As he requires a large dose, he might benefit from adding different class medicine, so that he can avoid the side effects from unconventional doses. ...Read more
What are the differences between loratadine and desloratidine in how well it works or how long it lasts?
Take one, get both: When you take loratidine, your liver breaks it down to desloratine which is actually responsible for the anti-histamine effects you need. Desloratidine has a much longer effect (28 hours) than loratidine (8 hours) which is why loratidine lasts such a long time. ...Read more
How does Claritin (loratadine) work? I'm wondering what would happen when I take two, how does it effect my body. And if I take one and I still feel itchy, would taking two help control my symptoms more?
An antihistamine: Claritin, (loratadine) like all other antihistamines, blocks histamine receptors thus prevents histamine release, one major mediator, out of many, that cause allergy symptoms. If one tablet isn't controlling your symptoms, better see your doctor, you may need some other medicine ...Read more
Prob ok: Antihistamines have been around for decades, and certainly many more potent than loratadine. They say worldwide the most common drug taken is diphenhydramine, mostly for the sedative properties (as a sleep aid). Antihistamines can affect certain types of glaucoma, and accentuate urine retention in those with prostate issues and dry mucous membranes, but usually not so much with loratadine per say. ...Read more

I used to take 1 claritin/day. Since it stopped working, I started with 1 Allegra (fexofenadine) 180 mg. This works for only 3-4 hours. Any advice?
My dr prescribed Claritin (loratadine) for a skin reaction, but its no longer effective. Can I take a second dose so I can get a decent night's sleep?
Claritin (loratadine): Rather than doubling the dose of Claritin (loratadine) it may be wiser to try a different antihistamine until you can get back in and be seen. Not knowing what the condition is it is difficult to know exactly what to do. I suspect this may be chronic hives. There are certainly other things to do if it is. You may want to see an Allergist, ...Read more
If I take Claritin (loratadine) but it doesn't work because I have a more intense cold with allergies, can I take something else tonight like Benedryl?

Since you have not mentioned any of your symptoms from which you seek relief, Its not possible to make specific recommendation. You may ask your pharmacist for assistance in selecting the best medication for you, especially given your existing meds. ...Read more
I am currently taking one tablet a day of generic form of Claritin for my seasonal allergies. Sometimes they work great other times, like today, they don't work at all. My question is: Should I take more than one dose within 24 hours since they do seem to
Don't exceed dosage: Better not to exceed recommended OTC dosage unless seen by an MD, which you might want to do, as you might need another prescription medication to control your symptoms, goodluck ...Read more
