Dear dr, my mom is 74 years old, her blood pressure is high at the moment, 170/105 I gave her 16 mg of candesartan cilexetil, but only went down 150/ 95 within 15 minutes, is that normal? How long will it take for the blood pressure to go down?
High systolic BP: At age 74, your mother has systolic hypertension which is severely elevated. She is not on maximum therapy, as she is on only 16 mg candesartan; (c); the maximum dose is 32 mg/day. She probably needs another medicine to bring her BP to a systolic < 140 mm of mg. Speak to her doctor about adding another medicine to her c to get her BP under better control. Good luck. ...Read more

Yes: blood pressure should decrease several hours after taking the med. More importantly is how your mother feels- does she feel weak or have a headache. is she under stress, what health issues does she have etc. Short term, a bp of 150/95 is not serious, but I would keep a log of bp. Time and date, readings and then make appointment with her primary and go over her bp medications and adjust as needed ...Read more

You mean dilatrate?: Dilatrate belongs to a class: calcium-chanel-blocker. By itself, it does not interact with Atacand (candesartan) and thus they can be used together to treat high blood pressure. Since they both lower bp, combo use may lower too much and cause hypotension/orthostatic hypotension etc. But otherwise they are safe together. If u have side effects/problems, consult your doc. Have you heard and what do you think of candesartan for migraines. I have daily migraines and my neurologist want to try me on this.?
Not a bad option: Ordinarily candesartan is a medication used to treat high blood pressure. In your case, if typical anti-migraine medications haven't worked, or if you are unable to take them, this medication could treat the underlying cause of your headaches and make them go away. I would try it per your neurologist's recommendations and see if it helps you. ...Read more
80yo F, high BP @10 PM (160/90) and on mornings, otherwise 115/65. Worse if stressed. Lercandipine, candesartan or ramipril, dose/sth else?
Maybe no medicine: Blood pressure is dynamic and changes during the day with a variety of causes including anxiety, and physical activity. In the absence of cardiac disease and at your age the risks of giving medication to treat the peak blood pressure might be more than the benefit as your blood pressure could drop too low at other times. Thorough evaluation of the risks and benefits of treatment should be done. ...Read more
