How long does it take for swollen glands in neck to go down after having a cold? What is considered normal?

Depends..: Many infections can linger even after sore throat has resolved. In general most reactive lymph nodes diminish in size after a couple weeks once the agent is gone. Mono, for example can take months....also sometimes lymph nodes get larger but don't go back to the original size. I suggest you see someone if it hasn't gone down 2-3 weeks after improvement in case you need to be examined or tested ...Read more

Allergic reaction.: An allergic reaction to a drug may take several days to appear. If you are taking no other new meds, then you likely are allergic to Bactrim. Call the prescribing doctor. Take 25-50 mg Benadryl, (diphenhydramine) (after reading label to be sure it is something you can take safely). If you have trouble breathing, swallowing, or chest pain, go to an ER right away. ...Read more

Wait and see: Sounds like you recently took a lot of antibiotics. After Azithromycin and bactrim, (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) you do not need any more. Commonly with a sinus infection, post nasal drip can cause a scratchy throat. Swollen lymph nodes are a nonspecific symptom which can indicate infection, inflammation or malignacy. Your symptoms should improve within 1-2 weeks. If not a return visit to your doctor is indicated. ...Read more

Pharyngitis/tonsilit: This is either not due to bacterial infection or, less likely, you are infected with an organism resistant to these antibiotics. Suspect you might have infectious mononucleosis or a mononucleosis-like syndrome. Best to see an ENT doctor or an infectious diseases expert. Hope this helps. ...Read more

What does it mean that my neck glands are swollen for so long?

Likely infectious...: Swollen lymph nodes are typically related to recent or current infection. Can stay swollen for a couple of weeks. If they remain 'squishy and mobile' (meaning you can move them around like a marble under the skin), then they are likely fine. If they get bigger, or feel less well-defined and don't move around, definitely have checked out. Also dpends on what you mean by 'so long'. ...Read more

Helps a little: I answered your previous question about your daughter. Knowing glands are enlarged helps a little, makes me think more towards an acute infection mononucleosis, but still not enough information about her history and exam to really say much. Dr. Can check throat: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or the "flu" (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to see about antibiotics). Trouble swallowing or speaking can be an emergency situation if severe. ...Read more

But if the nodes persist and don't change in size, is is worth getting checked by your doc Other things can cause your symptoms that can be minor or major. You need to be evaluated.
