How Long Does It Take For A Trimalleolar Fracture Without Surgery To Heal
6-8 weeks: Bone in a healthy person normally takes 6-8 weeks to heel. Having said that, trimalleolar fractures have the potential of being very debilitating. Along with the broken bones, you probably damaged the soft tissue between the 2 leg bones called the syndesmosis. Soft tissue can take up to 3 months to heel. A fracture is a broken bone. As there is cartilage at the end of many bones at the joint, a fracture may also include a break in the cartilage. Fractures and broken bones are the same thing. What are the pros and cons for getting the hardware removed from a trimalleolar fracture with dislocation surgery?

I had a trimalleolar fracture of my ankle 5 years ago that healed without surgery. I have always had pain, but recently its gotten much worse. Why?
Would surgery be required for a mildly displaced trimalleolar fracture? And what is the typical recovery time to walk and then return to sport use?
Surgery likely: Most trimalleolar fractures are unstable, meaning they involve significant ligament injury & the bones will not heal in the correct position without surgery. Make sure you are following up with an ortho surgeon skilled in the management of these fractures. Total recovery time 6-12 months. What therapy is involved with recovery of a trimalleolar fracture with dislocation surgery? Am I going to be able to ride my horse again?
Ankle and horses: It would be presumptuous and rash of me to tell you that absolutely you will ride again. However I strongly suspect you will.
