How long does it take for a cold sore on your lip to develop?

How long does it take for a cold sore on your lip to develop?

Not long: In my experience they come on very fast. Usually there is some tingling or mild pain. Next a small pink bump shows up. By the next day it is a larger, red, fluid filled blister. If you ask your doctor for a prescription for acyclovir, Valtrex (valacyclovir) or Famvir you can take it at the first sign. Taking it right away will usually keep it from turning into an ugly fever blister. Also abreva helps (otc). ...Read more

Keep it moist: Once you have reached the scab stage, it just has to resolve on it's own. If you keep it moisturized with ointment, it will soften the scab and heal more quickly.
If you have recurrent cold sores, consider having an antiviral onhand (pills and ointment). If you take or apply antivirals as soon as you begin to get symptoms (itching or burning), you can often abort the full blown cold sore. ...Read more

My cold sore in the corner of my mouth has scabbed over & is starting to crack and bleed making the healing process take longer. Will neosporin help?

Angular cheilitis?: A sore exactly in the corner of the mouth could be oral herpes (cold sore), but more likely is angular cheilitis, a different problem. It's often due to a superficial yeast infection, and antifungal creams may help. Neosporin probably won't help much. See your doctor and take it from there. Good luck! ...Read more

Can my baby get herpes simplex from her head being in close proximity to a cold sore? Also, how long can the virus live on skin?

Be very careful!: Herpes can be very dangerous in newborns up to age 1 month. HSV is transmitted by direct contact with infected sores or tissues. No kissing her until healed and frequently wash hands or use alcohol gel (like PurelĀ®), especially after touching your face. "Head in close proximity" probably is no risk. You might take anti-HSV Rx (e.g. valacyclovir). Call and discuss all this with baby's pediatrician. ...Read more

My long distance boyfriend has a cold sore and I'm seeing him this weekend- can I kiss his face and can he kiss my face? Like cheek/forehead not mouth

It depends...: Is the diagnosis certain? Facial herpes can occur, but less common than oral (lips, etc), and it is unusual to have outbreaks in two area, i.e. both cheek and forehead. If he has it and you do not, best to avoid kissing and other direct contact, e.g. no oral sex on you. You could have a blood test.
