I'm about to give birth in the next few weeks. I have heard a lot about pertussis risks & cases that are close to our home town. My family is vaccinated, but what other precautions should I take to protect our new baby?
Depends: If you were found to have antibodies in your blood against pertussis, you have been immunized like most people or recovered from the disease. If your cough was found to be due to pertussis, then baby, if unimmunized, may be given antibiotics prophylactically. Congratulations on being a parent -- awsome joys and awesome responsibility. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

With ur symptoms, I would see a doctor to see if u have pneumonia, bronchitis, etc. ...Read more
As infant, my son had reaction to dpt, so was given only dt. Now 28, he is told he can't have tetanus shot bcause it will contain pertussis. True?
Possibly.: This depends on what his reaction to the DPT was.If it was a mild reaction, further DPT's may not have been given. Recommendations have changed, though,so if it was a mild reaction,a Tdap may be safe for him now. Also, the pertussis portion of the Tdap is different from the pertussis portion of the DPT given to him as an infant. He may want to consider getting an infectious disease specialist consult. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
