Possibly.: This depends on what his reaction to the DPT was.If it was a mild reaction,further DPT's may not have been given. Recommendations have changed,though,so if it was a mild reaction,a Tdap may be safe for him now.Also, the pertussis portion of the Tdap is different from the pertussis portion of the DPT given to him as an infant.He may want to consider getting an infectious disease specialist consult. ...Read more

If faced with a heavy exposure anyone can get pertussis at any age.Their intensity of symptoms would vary.The kids risk of dying with it is eliminated with a single dose, but the best protection requires the complete series and boosters as scheduled. 5 days: Once a baby has been diagnosed with pertussis, the normal treatment is Azithromycin (zithromax). One is considered contagious until one completes the 5-day course. After that your baby will not be contagious, even if he/she is still coughing. The cough can go on for awhile.
