Constipated for a long time now and depended on enema, laxative, etc. Now pregnant with 2nd baby and seriously constipated. Help!

Common problem: Constipation is a common problem in pregnancy. It is safe to use a fiber supplement, probiotics, a stool softener like colace, or a gentle laxative like miralax (polyethylene glycol). My concern is that the constipation was happening in between pregnancies (when things should have been getting back to normal). I'd like to know if your doctor has checked your thyroid function levels. Hypo-thyroid can cause constipation. ...Read more

Go see your doctor: Because you live in australia, i don't know what's available over there with(out) a prescription so best to go see your doctor (who can also check for hypothyroidism). Avoid older antihistamines which can lead to constipation & urinary retention. Lots of different laxatives. Consider polyethylene glycol (available here in states w/o prescription), magnesium citrate, lactulose, senna, etc. ...Read more

Pain behind eye, threw up alot. I've been constipated for about 2 days. Do I need to take a laxative or enema? Or nothing since I threw up?

See a doctor: The constipation does not seem to be related to the pain behind the eyes and the vomiting. If your pain behind the eye is severe and you are vomiting without having diarrhea or stomach ache, I would worry about pressure in the brain as a worst case scenario. Or it could be that you have a migraine headache that could cause the eye pain and vomiting. You need to see your doctor to sort these out . ...Read more

Change your diet and: Fluids. Eat a high fiber diet between 20-25 grams per day, regular meal times and drink 80-100 oz of caffeine free alcohol free fluids daily. If you exercise and should add 20 oz per 30 minutes of strenuous exercise. Some meds contribute to constipation so take the meds with full glass of fluid instead of a sip in addition to the above recommended fluids. See your doctor if no improvement with abo. ...Read more

I just started accutane. I have really bad constipation I think its unrelated to accutane. Is it okay to use a laxative or fleet enema (sodium bisphosphate) with this drug?

Yes: You can use a laxative once in a while but concentrate on eating healthy with enough fiber and more fruits and vegetables to avoid medications. If chronically constipated you may need doctors advice of how to tackle it with a stool softener which would be safer. ...Read more

I toke two laxative two night ago an yesterday i felt sick so did a fleet enema (sodium bisphosphate) an it only got small amount out i stay constipated?

Constipation: Not sure what laxative you used. Normally, i would recommend the patient to have adequate hydration, stay active with exercising, eat high fiber diet. In addition, add fiber supplement such as citrucel (one table spoon in 8 oz of water daily). If the above is not improved, add MiraLAX (otc, one table spoon in 8 oz of water, daily to bid). Other agents are linzess, amitiza (lubiprostone). Work close with drs. ...Read more

Diagnosis needed: I would be concerned about a possible incomplete mechanical obstruction in your intestinal tract in view of symptoms of abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting.it may be an irritable bowel syndrome with predominant constipation, however. Nevertheless I recommend a thorough evaluation by a gastroenterologist who will order appropriate tests and, if advisable, refer to an abdominal surgeon for evaluation ...Read more

I am on citalapram. I have had constipation/diareah now I am taking laxatives to get back to regular. How long does it take to get back on track?

A short time: Citalapram belongs to a class of drugs called "ssris" though there side effect profile is better than the older antidepressants, they do share them to some degree. The problems you describe may be due to the drug's anticholinergic activity. Though it is weak, individual responses vary. It is short lived and tolerance to this side effect is very common. In 10 days to 2 weeks. ...Read more

In general, how long does it take for the bowel to get used to ducolax? Also take bulking agent & osmotic laxative. Slow transit constipation sufferer

It Depends: It depends on how long you have been using dulcolax, if you have been using this for more than a month, then this is probably going to stay the same. Dulcolax is a stimulant laxative, and cramping is side effect, but part of its mode of action. I presume you are referring to its side effects when you mean "get used to it". Hope this helps. ...Read more

Which laxative is safe to take for long time. I have been taking softovac for quite a long time. I have chronic constipation. Need strong laxative.

None, really. : It wouldn't really be advisable to take ANY laxative every day, all the time. The cause of your constipation should be investigated and elucidated. If idiopathic, there are treatment options besides laxatives. Even simple optimization of fiber and water intake may help. ...Read more
