I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism last year the meds worked. But I still have high blood pressure sometimes 169/121 what does the bottom one mean?

Diastolic: The bottom number of a blood pressure is the diastolic pressure, i.e. The pressure in the vascular system when the heart is supposed to be resting (between beats). When it is elevated, there is more stress on the blood vessels as well as on the heart. See your doc for options for treating the hypertension. Your heart will thank you. ...Read more

Hypertension (Definition)

A blood pressure reading has two numbers: a systolic blood pressure and a diastolic blood pressure. The systolic blood pressure is the maximum pressure the blood exerts on the vessels when the heart is beating. The diastolic blood pressure is the pressure the blood exerts on the vessels in between heartbeats. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, begins when the systolic blood pressure remains above 140 or when the diastolic blood pressure remains above 90. Hypertension can be a result of increased blood flow through vessels or increased resistance to ...Read more

Serious problem: The BP numbers are both used to diagnose hypertension. In general, the top number (systolic) is the one best correlated with outcomes;however the bottom one (diastolic) has been used as well. Regardless, that number being over 100 puts you at high risk of heart attacks and strokes. You need urgent care to bring it down, and likely more than one medicine in addition to thyroid treatment. ...Read more

I have hashimoto's. I can't lose weight. I have high blood pressure and I have had periods of hyperthyroidism. Why not eliminate my thyroid function?

I have hashimoto's. I can't lose weight. I have high blood pressure and I have had periods of hyperthyroidism. Why not eliminate my thyroid function?

Hypo/hyperthyroidism: From your question it is hard to know what is going on. Hashimotos thyroiditis and graves disease can coexist, and can yield intermittent hyperthyroidism. If this persists, radioactive iodine can be used to ablate the thyroid. But sometime the thyroid burns out on its own. If your thyroid blood tests are normal, then probably not causing your weight/bp issues. You need to see an endocrinologist. ...Read more

Not long ago diagnosed with high blood pressure, my doctor asked for a blood test, please can you tell me what can be found from a blood test?

Kidney disease: From a blood test, I suspect your internist is checking your BUN/Creatinine, makers of kidney function. Some BP medicines affect this parameter adversely and hence one needs a baseline value. Alternately, your doctor is further looking at GFR and/or microalbinuria to ascertain microscopic kidney disease. Either way, BP control is important. If lifestyle changes have not helped attain target, meds ...Read more

Blood pressure last night my dad felt dizzy and blood present was 138 and 100. He has high blood pressure history. What can we do to help lower?

Need to see Dr: If you mean his BP was 138/100, that should not have caused dizziness at that level in someone w/high bp, so should see dr for exam / testing to identify what is cause and to get BP med rx. Home/self-treatment very unlikely to get that range BP to normal levels. Good luck! ...Read more
